Assault/Harassment thread

I hope that as we take down more and more high-profile offenders, the guys that harass waitresses, hotel maids and stock clerks will also take the hint that their actions are despicable. And I hope other guys will start calling them on it.

Well, Columbia University paid the accused man a settlement and said he was not responsible for what the girl had claimed. Police didn’t pursue charges either.

I forgot to add the Duke LaCrosse case, an egregious case of lying about sexual assault.

all accusations are considered true from the very first moment and immediately reported in the press before vetting (and I believe 85% of them will be true…but what about the 15% that might not be?)

[/QUOTE]

I find this highly unlikely. Most of the accusations that have been reported are about very powerful men. I guarantee you that the lawyers at the companies who released statements about the firings/discipline of the men were verrrrrrry careful to make sure the allegations were vetted and found credible.

companies are immediately firing rather than risk lawsuits, dragged-out coverage.

Again, see above. I think they are just as fearful of lawsuits from the accused/outed, and they are being very careful and mindful about the actions they are taking.

ETA: It ends when the harassment, assault, intimidation and rape ends.

Garrison Keillor?? He, too, has been fired. He claims that he unintentionally put his hand on a woman’s bare back. He said he was trying to pat her back but her shirt was untucked and his hand went 6" under it , touching her back. He says he apologized. (This doesn’t sound like much to me…) I wonder what her version of the story is?

I asked about high profile men falsely accused and so far I’ve only seen mentions of cases of college students where the cases became high profile.
How many people here (without looking it up) can give the names of those falsely accused? Obviously not anyone that brought them up since their names weren’t included.
High profile men have a great deal of power. It’s unlikely that they are going to see their lives destroyed by false accusations. Look at the most recent examples of Lauer and Franken. A great many people waited, hoping there was an explanation, until their was either an admittance or multiple accusations. And I don’t even think I have to give the names of accused men who haven’t have their lives destroyed, even though there is at minimum circumstantial evidence that the accusations have merit.

They didn’t fire Garrison Keillor for accidentally touching a woman’s back. Be real.

As long as the guys in charge are doing this stuff and obviously getting away with it, there is no hope for the line employees who face these situations far too often and always lose

Some press outlets do background checking of the stories before reporting them. The recent attempt to scam The Washington Post with a false sex scandal story about Roy Moore instead resulted in it being reported as a scam attempt because the reporters background checked the story.

If a man has power over a woman’s job, promotions, etc. is a relationship between them truly consenual?

And what should happen to women who ‘sleep their way to the top’? As long as it’s possible to do that, those women create a bad environment for women who don’t want to.

It feels like the dam broke. There were many high profile instances of sexual assault and harassment that people were hiding and now they are all revealed. Like women have become emboldened.

But does it make men nervous? Or make men and women reel? Yes, I am noticing that, too. The men I know are not harassers and didn’t know how much was going on. The women are surprised by the identities of some of these men, but not that it existed.

Oh goodness, I’m not surprised in the slightest. That’s what working in corporate America for 40 years will get you. No surprises.

“money just shouldn’t be factor, IMO.”

How else should we compensate people for civil harms? If the plaintiff no longer works at the defendant company, what non-monetary relief can they get? Even if the culprit is fired, that doesn’t compensate for the harms the plaintiff suffered.

Every day I go in to work I try not to masturbate in front of my coworkers. I try not to describe the sexual dream I had about a subordinate the night before. I try not to tell the new hire how attractive his ass & package looks in those skinny jeans. I try not to invite a coworker to my hotel room for a business meeting, in hopes it will turn into a romp in bed. I don’t invite the intern into my office and drop the bath robe I’m wearing to reveal my naked body, poised to receive sex. I try to keep promotions and who I’m sexually attracted to, and who has come thru with sexual favors, separate. When there is an after work party with alcohol, I try to not put my hands down a man’s pants, or stick my tongue down anyone’s throat.

Really. I jest. Female here. It’s NOT hard to NOT DO those things!

Men can meet the same standard.

Money can help pay for therapy and additional training/education for the victim, perhaps to switch fields, particularly if blacklisted. As limited as it is, money DOES help some.

Who in the hell approved the button Matt Lauer had in his office so that he could lock the door without getting up???

Midwest, that’s the best thing I’ve read all day. Thank you for that!

No. Those women are not creating that environment. The men asking them for sex - their bosses and superiors - are the ones creating that environment. That some women suck it up and do it is a damn shame but they’re still not the ones with the power in this scenario.

Midwest - =D>
