Audition Day Horror Stories?

FutureMillie6, how did everything go for you at VTA?

New one to add for the 2013/2014 season. S and I just returned from Rider. Due to the weather we decided to stay 2 nights so the car was not loaded with our luggage, that included extra clothes. S came up from his audition and I could tell by the look on his face he didn’t do as well as he wanted to. He said “I really have to nail this dance audition or I’m afraid I’m out” and off he went to the restroom to change. He came out of the restroom a few moments later beet red with a look of distress on his face I’ve never seen. He was shaking. He set his dance belt (boys dance underwear) his dance shorts and socks on top of the toilet paper dispenser. He turned to throw his dress pants over the door and knocked everything into the toilet. His stuff was dripping. I have never in his life seen him this rattled. I said I will run back to the hotel and get your shorts don’t worry. He was worried though, worried I wouldn’t make it back. Later I found out he told the girl next to him “I’ll kill it in the dress pants before I let this beat me I swear”… I came back less than 10 minutes later with a pair of Rider shorts. A look of total relief washed over him “mom OMG you are back already” I said “yea and here’s your Rider shorts” he giggled, put them on and said “I prefer to dance in this style of shorts anyway” He came back from the dance audition very confident so…moral of this story pack extras or find a better place to change than a tiny stall!!

Not the first time nor will it be the last time this will happen. Nice anecdote.

To tag onto Calliene’s warning…it is almost best if your student can enter a “bubble” or “zone” or just plain isolation prior to the audition so that they can focus on what THEY know. This way they are less prone to distractions. It is nerve-wracking as it is, but auditionees can greatly minimalize the distractions, if they choose.
