Auto Insurance for Non-Driving College Students

I’m in MI and DD is licensed in MI but my Allstate agent told me we don’t need to cover her because she’s over 200 miles away. If she were to get an out of state license would that mess with her dependent status?

As long as we pay over half her support and she is in school she is a dependent until she is 24.
The only problem I see is when she does need her own insurance - but I can’t imagine her rate being more than what we were going to be charged.
We will take another look at insurance companies next time around - we had just switched in December so didn’t want to go through the process all over again. We just didn’t realize that her coverage would be a factor in the quote.

^Since your DD is no longer listed on anyone’s insurance, even as an occasional driver, she may be looking at new driver rates when she gets her first vehicle.

I believe insurance rules vary by state? We’re in California, and 21st Century allows us to exempt our kid who is away at school. So, no cost. Then, there is a waiver that can be gotten four times per year, which gives coverage for up to 30 days. That is free of charge. So, that should work unless a summer stay at home is more than 30 days. In that case, the insurance has to be added retroactive to the first day at home.
