<p>The thought was that lifetime appointments make judges immune from political pressure while they are on the bench. They are accountable to no one.</p>
<p>Getting them onto the bench, though - warfare! Especially when there is pressure to nominate younger judges, who will obviously serve for a longer time. </p>
<p>Position - less political. Process of getting the judge that position - quagmire.</p>
