Haha, yes, it was clear, as signified by the
Although Iām not going to lie, I got a bit worried there for a brief second! As for grad school, though, yeah, Iām probably being a bit presumptuous. I donāt know much about grad school admissions, all Iāve heard is that lots of research experience (which I know Iāll have plenty of) helps quite a bit. So, um, weāll see how it goes, and Iāll get back to you in 4 years or so :p

Corranged: I did
I was just referring to the fact that, from what Iāve heard, most schools tend not to accept too many of their undergrads into their grad programs. Or at least in astro.

What corranged was saying was, you have already lost. The only way to win is to not have applied/gotten accepted to Caltech for undergrad in the first place. Now that you have failed that, there is no possible way to winā¦

Anyhow, now Iām curious. Has anyone received an Axline letter that says ātuitionā only, making no mention of āroom and boardā?

Yes. There are two scholarships. One is for tuition, the other for tuition, room, and board. Both are a pretty good deal : )

Dualityās right, Guitar. :)

ā¦Why am I in the Caltech forum?

Because you LOVE me, duh. :p

so another quick questionāaside from during frosh surfs, itās not a big deal whoās gotten scholarships and such, right?

(now that iām over the initial excitement, the implied expectations are sort of spooking me)

Not from what Iāve heard. Are you planning on going this summer, if you decide to attend?

No, itās not a big deal, fortunately. Itās a slightly delicate subject so people with the scholarship donāt flaunt it⦠but there arenāt any expectations hanging over your head except your own. You do have to keep a decent (3.0 if I remember right) GPA once grades start, but thatās about it, and that isnāt all that hard.

My feeling about students is that they donāt talk about SAT scores, $$$ (merit or aide) once they are accepted. The spirit of cooperation, being with others who share a passion for math/science, is dominant.

How many Lingle Scholarships are given out each year? Just the one?

ben & bookwormāgreat. (that attitude makes sense; i just wanted to make sure.)

& adamānot sure yet, although i probably ought to decide on summer plans soon. which means choosing a college soon⦠ack. you?

Well, I donāt even plan on attending Caltech so I highly doubt Iāll be able to SURF there this summer
(although Ben, if I can, that would be lovely! I could very easily shift my work plans from NYC to Caltech as I have a very close collaborator at IPAC I could work with). But I have a little bit of work to finish and, more pressingly, papers to be published, so my summer will be like last summerāgoing into the city 5 days a week dayāexcept spending less time doing research and more time writing, and fewer days actually going into work while in the city
An enormous STS reunion in NYC will be essential this summer, you realize.

Have all the scholarships already been offered?

I ask if only one Lingle scholarship is offered per year because I got one tooā¦

~Majorly confused~

So then Kim isnāt the most amazing person ever?

Congratulations neapol1s!!!

Iām not sure why youāre asking instead of telling us that thereās more than one⦠unless you think Iām lying, of course. (Did you get the āit is with honor toā¦ā letter? That would mean there are at least two that are exactly the same. Or if they corrected the grammar on yours, they probably just love you more ^.^)

I wonder if there are others as well?

Hey, congratulations to you too!!!

No, I donāt think youāre lying. I just got a little paranoid at first, because I thought that maybe they sent me my letter by accident. But then I thought about it, and itās probably more likely that they gave out more than one this year.

The grammar on my letter is a little off too. Iām not sure if this is a grammar mistake, but I think the commas around the words āor higherā might be unnecessary. I personally wouldāve used parentheses instead of commas.

I guess itās none of my business if anyone else got the scholarship, even though I am a little curious. But hey, as long as I get my extra $7500 a year, Iām happy.

Congrats nea!! Could you post your āstatsāā¦just a sort of runthrough of what your application looked like, out of curiosity? :)
