Back Surgery in your 30s?

I guess my definition of hoops is different from yours. From your other posts, I think I saw you had PT and the injections as well. I count those as hoops. Dh got an MRI very quickly. Before doing the PT or injection. Did you have to do a series of injections? I hope once dh does that, the insurance path will be clear. Dh’s neuro is new to the area, and getting scheduled is not going to be an issue.

Thanks for your reply and glad to know you are on the mend  It’s been tough. My dh is a marathon, triathlon (half iron man level) type, and this has been hard physically, mentally, and socially for him. No “trigger” for this, really, so very unexpected.

That wasn’t to satisfy insurance however. The PT was b/c they thought it was my hamstring. I’m also sure the PT is what caused my back to get so bad. My leg hurt before PT, but by the time I’d gone thru PT I couldn’t walk, drive, sit, or stand. The injection was to see if I could get some pain relief while I was waiting for surgery (nope!!). I only did one injection and it didn’t do anything at all. I had some minor relief from the massive amounts of lidocaine, but that wore off after a few hours.

No doubt this is very emotionally and mentally difficult to deal with. I’m not athletically active, but as a SAHM I do just about everything to run this family. I spent my eldest son’s first Thanksgiving and Xmas home from college on the couch in pain. By the end, I couldn’t even stand long enough to fully shower all at once.

But recovery is pretty quick!! About a week post-op I was able to get groceries (though I walked slowly!). That felt like such a victory! 2 weeks post op I was driving again. Now almost 6 weeks later I pretty much feel like myself again.

I have had two ESI’s. The first gave some relief for about 6 weeks. The second did nothing. PT landed me in bed and difficulty walking for a few days. I am waiting to see the surgeon. Another factor to consider is age. At 69, I do not want to be doing this in 5 years or 10 years. I am part of a large HMO so the “hoop” is the long waits for service.

The ESIs, are they given preventatively or in the midst of crisis?

@somemom - for dh, as a treatment. Not preventatively.

It did nothing for my dh. Expect at least one more to be necessary. Probably fairly soon. Radiologist said to come back in two weeks if first one didn’t help.

Mine was mid crises.
