When my husband got his CPAP machine, there were some mixups about his needs. The delivery person initially included an O2 bottle as power outage backup measure (then they took it back I think later). Not sure if that could work for you, but it might help others sorting through options.
Until we get our system installed, I can do as I have been, using the portable O2 concentrator and the 500W backup battery & recharging at my brother’s place during prolonged outages but happy to have a better, more robust solution. This should actually exceed current use so we have a little head room if electrical needs increase. We can also take perishables to his house when the electric company notifies us that the outage is projected to be prolonged.
We used to lose power in our area fairly often; we still do but it happens less often. We installed a whole-house generator (Briggs and Stratton) because we’re in a semi-rural area with septic systems and private wells. Those systems work with electric pumps and once the power goes, our ability to use the toilets and water faucets/showers is very limited. We placed the generator on the side of our property where it’s hidden behind tree/shrubs. We built our home a 20-some years ago and according to the maintenance company, we’ll probably need a new one in the next 3-4 years. Not looking forward to that expense.
We are about ready to sign with a company for more PV panels and a backup battery. When the power goes out, all the panels will just power the battery and no power to the grid. It should seamlessly run all the power for our home. Normally, our original panels can send power to the grid and also to the battery. The new panels will only feed the battery and we can use that for daily use.
Because a building permit and elevation certificate are needed (since we are AE in the flood plain), we may not get installation until 2027, depending on how long it takes for permit to be granted.
We signed a contract for two Tesla batteries in March. The approvals are all in place but there is some hold up with CT Green Bank (or something like that). We are really annoyed, because if these are installed before the end of September, we will get a $1000 rebate from Tesla. At this point, it looks like we are going to lose that $1000.
There are three different people within the company we contracted who are supposedly working to get this resolved.
I’m not holding my breath!
