Bad College Names

Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne

IPFW doesn’t really roll off the tongue.

“Colgate, the toothpaste school” (#10)

Yale, the lock school.

  • When Hamilton plays Colgate in Hamilton, which is the home team? Abbott & Costello could have had some fun with that one.
  • Sewanee is also known as The University of the South. Good thing they also go by Sewanee. Wait, how's that pronounced again?
  • THE Ohio State University
  • Skidmore --> Skid mark
  • Swarthmore. Haverford. On a date:

“Well, darling, are you enjoying your spot of tea? I see you take it with two cubes and your pinkie in the air.”

“Quite smashing, dahhhhling. Now, Master Swarthmore, do come to the gala with me afterward.”

“But of course, Lady Haverford. Perhaps we’ll see Professor Dartmouth there.”

hehe

@whenhen: Ok, I had to look that one up! I couldn’t believe that can be true, but it is!

Transylvania University – the name makes me think everyone will guess (wrongly) the name of it’s most famous graduate. Frank N. Stein?

Do the two USCs ever play each other? Gamecocks vs. Trojans

@2muchquan USC played USC in 1983. The Trojans lost to the Gamecocks 14 - 38.

I guess the Gamecocks rose to the occasion! Wonder if the Trojans covered the spread?

Stetson University - named after a man who produced Hats. Their sports teams are called the Hatters, which is even more cringe-worthy.

Rider University. Just not a good name in general.

All the Pitt branches…just call them University of Johnstown or University of Greensburg or something. Naming a university after two cities is just strange.

Kean University. Pronounced Kane.

Quinnipiac University. Just really, really annoying to spell/pronounce.

University of New Haven. Located in North Haven.

Come to think of it, really, any private school that’s named “University of ____”.

A college that’s classified as a university. i.e. Providence College, Boston College, Dartmouth College, The College of New Jersey, etc.

Rutgers University. Just an ugly word tbh.

Harvey Mudd

Surprised no one has mentioned Kalamazoo yet.

Whitman is not a bad name, but it’s in Walla Walla…

My alma mater, not a bad name, but Washington University… not in Washington DC, or in the state of Washington… kind of like Miami University of Ohio.

I second Skidmore and Ursinus. And add Bowdoin ( just plain awkward) and my DS’s choice, Beloit.

Surprised no one has mentioned Rice or Hope College yet. Food or wishful thinking, which is better for a diploma?

Totally agree with many of the others mentioned.

Also surprised that someone didn’t like Juniata. Most kids (around here) think that one is pretty cool name-wise.

I’m from Pennsylvania and even there many people thought the college was “Juanita.”

At least California has only a few of those (in their official names).

Here are some more from other states:

Boise State
Bemidji State
St. Cloud State
Youngstown State
Appalachian State
Elizabeth City State
Fayetteville State
Winston Salem State
Sam Houston State
Sul Ross State
Angelo State
Midwestern State
Stephen F. Austin State
Kennesaw State
Albany State
Armstrong State
Columbus State
Fort Valley State
Savannah State
Atlanta Metro State
Bainbridge State
Dalton State
Darton State
Gordon State
Portland State

Of course, then there are also East Carolina and Western Carolina.

I always think “Barnyard” when I hear “Barnard.”

Also, back in the 1980s I remember hearing IU-PUI being pronounced “Oooo-eee-poo-eee”

@MinnesotaDadof3 wouldn’t Transylvania’s most famous graduate be Dr. Acula?

For confusion sake:

St. John’s College
St. John’s University
Xavier University
Xavier University of Louisiana
Wheaton College (IL)
Wheaton College (MA)
Columbia College (name used by 9 colleges and a division of Columbia University)

@prezbucky beat me too it.

Sewanee: The University of the South. Always reminds me of Uncle Remus for some reason

Also on my list and not yet mentioned:
• Christopher Newport University. Who the hell was Christopher Newport?
• The College of New Jersey. It doesn’t roll off the tongue.
• Case Western Reserve University. I always think it’s a military school

University of the Pacific - Located on a continent.

Regarding the USCs:

When South Carolina plays Oregon State, it’s a party.

And when Southern Cal plays them in baseball, “Heeee’s SAFE!”
