Bad plan to fly into/out of SFO this month

@artloversplus @ProfessorPlum168 got his hotel arrangements and such from United Airlines. We have been given hotel vouchers etc from them to…to THEIR choice of a hotel, not ours. It’s not like he could have shopped around for cheaper hotels using an airline voucher for a delayed flight. The airline decides.

Happy to report we flew into SFO today - from Chicago/United- no delays.

Today must have been a good day there. All Alaska flights departed on time so far. Of course, Mr. will get the short straw.

yes, that is correct. Nice hotel (Crowne Plaza), almost 20 minutes from the airport going back towards home, so many hotels must have been full already. But we got to enjoy all of 4.5 hours of sleep and breakfast for the kid (I don’t eat breakfast) before heading out. United needed to do a much better job of distributing out the vouchers, each person in line probably took 10-15 minutes each and there was a loooong line. If my wife wasn’t working that evening and I wasn’t such a cheapskate, I would have definitely gone home, but the cheapness and optimist in me kept saying to stay in line and get the vouchers. Just before the flight got cancelled, the flight attendants were offering up to $1000 for volunteers to go on a different flight since at first they were going to switch to a smaller airplane, so I thought that just maybe they were giving out big money for vouchers. Silly me.

D2’s serious BF works in San Francisco and is due to fly out today to spend the weekend with her. They’ve been long distance for 2 years now, and she gets upset when he’s delayed out of SFO, since their time together is so limited to begin with. I’ve let her know about this so that she can prepare herself for the possibility. If not for this thread, I doubt I would have known about it.

The local TV news reported that the work appears to be ahead of schedule and should be completed by 9/25. A couple days earlier than anticipated.

The news last night said SFO is the third worst airport in the US (didnt hear who the other 2 were) in terms of delays, but usually because the of the fog that affects visibility.

Seems like he should look into flying out of OAK instead of SFO. Both are a short BART ride away from the places where lots of people work in San Francisco.

Let me guess… the other two are LAX and O’Hare? ?

the runways cross each other and the problem is the pavement weakness under where two of them cross. Thus, they have to dig up both. (which is prolly why they were down to just two runways the other day.)

LAX has few weather delays – “It Never Rains in California”

Guessing its the NYC area airports, likely EWR.

I think they do use the 19/1 runways but don’t they choose based on wind direction at the time? I live close enough to the airport to hear the back-blast from planes taking off on the 1L/1R runways (there’s a whole local group upset about how much louder the planes are than they used to be at night… they took out a sound wall when they remodeled a few years ago).

Hubby is driving my oldest to Oregon next week (in her car). He was planning to fly back, spend one night here, then fly out to a business meeting in Europe the next day, but when he found out about the runway issue he rebooked it to just stay in Oregon an extra night and fly to Europe out of Portland so he doesn’t risk having his flight back here from Eugene cancelled and then missing the longer flight the next day. Means he needs to pack more for the road trip though.

Whichever direction is more into head wind is the direction they will use the runway in. Since winds are more likely to come from the north than south, the 1/19 runways are more likely to be used in the 1 direction (heading north). Since winds are more likely to come from the west than east, the 10/28 runways are more likely to be used in the 28 direction (heading west).

The 10/28 runways are longer and therefore preferred for landings, although larger aircraft take off from them. The 1/19 runways are normally in use for takeoffs.

The runway numbers are the approximate direction in degrees from north (= 0) divided by 10.

@shellfell @artloversplus I don’t know if all airlines do it but United offered me last week to reschedule. You should check with your airline if they can waive the change fee. My dates were not flexible so I turned down the offer. My flight from Newark took off over two hours behind schedule (to avoid congestion at landing).

@NJEngineerDad, S got notified by his airlines that they would waive the change fee (altho he just got that offer), but only to flights on those airlines out of either OAK or SJC. He couldn’t find any alternative flights that worked for him, so he’s rolling the dice with SFO. He knows this may not be a very fruitful work trip.

My son and his GF did not hear anything from Jet Blue. They called the night before their flight (when they saw it was already delayed) and Jet Blue wanted to charge them for changing their flight (out of Oakland rather than SFO), but his GF talked them out of it. She is good at that. They are still returning into SFO on Monday. Hopefully it works out.

Beautiful weather these past few days, so no fog interfering with flights.

It’s too hot! We need the fog back!

The work is supposed to be completed the morning of Friday 9/27. I don’t think people with October and November flights need to worry – unless our current heat wave impedes the pouring of concrete.

It is supposed to be much cooler tomorrow. Late
Morning toddler birthday party will be in the 60’s tomorrow.
