Bad plan to fly into/out of SFO this month

Just to make sure that incoming aircraft do not try to land in the wrong place?

@ucbalumnus -Well, yes, obviously they wanted a visual to keep planes off the runway under repair. The article you linked is a year old. That said, the day we flew out of SFO, the headline on the Sunday SF Chronicle read " SFO Pilots mixed up runways, FAA finds" https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/FAA-safety-report-reveals-cases-of-pilots-mixing-14436212.php Wasn’t what we wanted to read as we were boarding the plane!

That seems to be because 01 and 10 (both valid runway numbers at SFO) can be mistyped into flight computers. Renumbering 01 to 02 could avoid the problem, although it would make that runway number slightly inconsistent with the direction it points (014 degrees from north).

D & SIL finally made it after a 3 hour, 42 minute delay. Hoping their return flight back on Sunday is closer to on-time.

Dh flies out early tomorrow from SFO and received a notice from United that weather at his connecting airport (Houston) is expected to be poor and asked if he wanted to be rerouted. Unfortunately, there’s not a good alternative. Seems rather ironic; the runway situation resolves but there’s another problem to deal with!

@collage1 - well, at least he didn’t have plans to fly to the bahamas :frowning:

Huge flooding in Texas in some places…is that the issue?

300 flights cancelled to/from the Houston airports

^^Unfortunately, yes. Flew in without a hitch but the incoming flight was 15 minutes late which was just long enough for a weather delay to hit. Waited a couple hours to find out his was one of the 300 flights cancelled. He’ll land at midnight tonight in Memphis rather than Jackson around dinnertime. He’s headed to the game at Ole Miss tomorrow.

Mr. has landed. Take off from SFO was not an issue… every non-cancelled flight seemed to be on time, but now they have to wait for almost as long as 1/2 of their in air time for a gate to empty up at SEA. Sheesh.

UPDATE:

Had to call a Delta agent to help me book tickets using the vouchers we got when a fare dropped. I happened to mention that I was disappointed that wen we booked the SFO tix with an agent (using a companion ticket) we weren’t informed of the runway closure, and were delayed 3 1/2 hrs out and 1 hr back (and would have booked through SJC), she was appalled and gave DH and I EACH $200 credit vouchers, good for a year!! Score!

Runway work was completed 3 days ago in SFO, but the agent told me there are some road closure issues around the airport (and when we were there the train from the rental car location was down, but fortunately that wasn’t an issue for us). @anomander - how did you manage with the cable cars down when you were there?

D2’s bf flew again from SFO to Dallas on Friday. He said they had just pulled off the gate, heading to runway for takeoff, when the pilot returned to the gate and made everyone de-plane for a 2 hour delay. No explanation given.

The same thing happened to me in August heading from Dallas to SFO. It turned out to be fog related for my delay.

that stinks, @Nrdsb4 . According the this https://sf.curbed.com/2019/9/19/20873791/sfo-runway-delay-rebuild-28l-ends-early they finished the repairs/repaving on Thursday. after 606 flights were delayed and 247 flights cancelled int he first week alone (per the linked article).

@jym626 I used Lyft to get back up the hill. Long waits as usual for the financial district at rush hour which was a bummer, but it beats walking.

On the plus side, my flights in and out of SFO were on time. Altogether a good trip, tried out a couple new restaurants that were fantastic - Manila and Nari.

Taking notes re: restaurants. I will be spending some time in that area regularly…

All gates at SFO will be renumbered in October. So now for those of you who memorized 70-75 as the lucky United close gates, forget those thoughts.
