Balance beetween academic and social in the south

bzva74 I never said i was looking for a conservative campus once. I really don’t know why you keep saying that.
TFM2011 Thanks for the suggestions my dad went to Richmond so I planned on looking there.

Oh wow, you’re right. I got carried away.
Sorry about that. So do you mind if we offer campuses which aren’t particularly conservative?

Not at all.

For southern universities, it is Duke, Vandy, Rice, UVA, Emory or bust. Maybe throw Georgetown in there if you consider DC the “south.” Some of the universities being thrown out on this thread really stretch the word “academics” in the original post.

A balance between academics and social life does not mean any school in the south. TCU? South Carolina? Seriously? Come on people.

Tulane has really stepped up its selectivity in the last few years, has Gekk life, great social aspect. has a diverse student body.

“For southern universities, it is Duke, Vandy, Rice, UVA, Emory or bust”

“Some of the universities being thrown out on this thread really stretch the word “academics” in the original post.”

Really? Are you serious? Davidson, Washington & Lee and Wake Forest “stretch the word academics in the original post” Please. The schools you mentioned are outstanding but to say that the other colleges mentioned would be a “bust” is naive at best and ignorant at worst.

^ Actually, I was referring to South Carolina, Elon, etc.

This kid has great academics, or so he claims. With that in mind, there’s no point in suggesting schools like Elon.

If you’re into science, Rice is your best bet. LAC W&L. Business, pre-med, etc Duke, Vandy is also good. Emory has great umm…humanities I think. And a lot of Emory people go clubbing in Atlanta, it’s got a vibrant party scene.
If you want some publics UVA , W&M, and UNC-CH are your best bets.

Tulane. New Orleans. Seriously consider it.

Interesting that UT-Austin always gets left off these ‘Best Southern University’ threads. It can’t be that it’s in Texas, since Rice keeps getting mentioned. And it can’t be that it’s a public since UVA and UNC are mentioned. It doesn’t really make much sense - UT-Austin has more highly ranked programs and faculty, across more academic disciplines than every Southern university. That includes Duke, Vanderbilt, UVA, Emory, Rice, etc. In terms of ranked programs, Duke is really the only Southern university that comes close. It at the very least deserves honorable mention.

“A balance between academics and social life does not mean any school in the south. TCU? South Carolina? Seriously? Come on people.”

I definitely mentioned that these weren’t on the same level as Richmond, Vandy, W&L, etc. Many people aren’t just interested in the top colleges of a certain type but also some nice backups where they could be given some scholarships. Both South Carolina and TCU have nice scholarship packages and better honors programs which are available, I still think that you could be very successful in many majors at either university. The connections within in the TCU community to many of the major employers in Fort Worth escalates the appeal of TCU for top applicants in some areas.

tfm2011
Is your name referencing what i think it is?

Haha yes it is, I actually don’t like the name now but it was the only thing I could think of when I was signing up.

Great site, some find it offensive, but who cares.

Bowtie…D and you sound very similar. She applied last year to Vandy, UVa, UNC, and Wake among others. (FWIW, she chose UVa and is very happy.) You might also consider SMU. They have an honors program and often offer considerable merit $. Dallas is a great place to live, and the campus us beautiful. I would also suggest UT. They have several honors programs you can apply to (ex: Plan II), and the networking opportunities rival ANY school.

For what it is worth, I am a conservative who currently attends UNC and I haven’t had any problems. I absolutely love my school.

Why dismiss Texas Christian so casually? Just because the school has a competitive Division I athletics department (football) doesn’t mean the education isn’t any good. I’m hoping that Lake Jr.will consider applying to the Mechanical Engineering major at TCU. From what I’ve read about the place, it provides a great balance of academics and student life outside of the classroom.
