Barnard Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

I applied Early Decision to Barnard College with a 3.92 GPA and a 33 ACT. The thing I’m most worried about is my first quarter grades since I had several B’s. Does anyone know how much First Quarter Grades matter in admissions?

There’s probably not a generic answer - with holistic admission, individual context might be important.

Wow, you sound like very well-rounded and interesting candidate. I think you would be a great addition to Barnard.
I believe there is an amazing urban gardening project when Barnard students work with young kids at Morningside park.

Not sure about how TO and GPA might work, but they seem to take a holistic approach in admissions and like different types of applicants.

Hello! I applied ED and am very nervous for Wednesday. I’d really appreciate if someone was able to chance me!!

that’s it!! thank you to anyone who reads this… and best of luck to everyone who applied!

Your application is probably as strong as those of all the other exceptional young women who have applied ED. Most people will have a lot of strong aspects (in your case: your AP scores confirmed your GPA, and your 4-year persistence with various clubs activities are positive, leadership or not – not to speak of some of the amazing things you accomplished). Other students might have other particular strengths (such as class rank, or standardized test results).

When a college cannot accommodate >70% of excellent ED applicants just like yourself, there is no way of telling which individual applications might fit particular institutional priorities this year. You have done extremely well for yourself and have a competitive application - and whatever the outcome for everyone, there won’t be any one thing to point to that you could have controlled – it’s likely more a question of the mix of who else happened to apply this year.

Good luck to everyone! All of you are “Barnard material”, but there just isn’t enough “Barnard” for everyone – however, your excellence and achievements thus far are setting you off to a promising college career and future life, no matter where you happen to take classes for the next 4 years.

I’ll tell you this time tomorrow. Just kidding, you are a great candidate but they turn away great candidates too sometimes. They would be lucky to have you, and I hope they do. Your EC and numbers really good and I think half of ED admits are TO, so in good company there as well.
Congrats on all your accomplishments!

Good luck to everyone!

My D24 got in - she is absolutely thrilled and there were a lot of happy tears all around. She is pretty private so I can’t share her stats - they are not that different from others mentioned. I did want to point out that she was test optional - didn’t submit SAT score and only submitted two AP scores - so for those of you wondering about this for the future, clearly test optional is a feasible strategy. Thanks to all the parents and alumni on this thread for helping to keep things in perspective and offering support. College admissions is quite a process - much more so than when I went to school. Congrats to everyone whether you go to Barnard or elsewhere -

Do many international students who ask for aid get deferred ED?

I was sure that my stats were great considering the opportunities I was given in my country and my low-income household. I took the SAT (1520) and graduated as a valedictorian.
I was applying as a political science/ women’ studies major, and a lot of my ECs revolved around that. I have a lot of MUNs, internships related to international relations, elections, and finance, student government (vice president), founder of a debate and German speaking club, and also organized several women in leadership conferences in my hometown. During my junior year, I also won an international scholarship to attend a German camp over the summer.

I felt like Barnard was a great fit for me, and I did a lot of research when writing my essays. What do you think are my chances of getting in after a deferral?

Congrats everyone who made it, my daughter did not get in. A little surprised given GPA/ACT, national rank EC, and it did not feel good. But onto the supplementals.
