Bathroom Remodel

Coral…what about the OP. That poster is doing their hall bathroom…new floor, tub, sink, vanity, toilet, the works…but no change in lay out. That is a main bathroom. How much would you estimate it costing with all of the work being done by others? I think their quotes sound about right, considering they aren’t planning to do any of the work themselves.

We plan to do a hall bathroom. There will be a new sink and vanity, and a new toilet. And a new floor. But the difference…we will do all of the removal of the old things, do our own purchasing of the new items. DH will install the vanity and the toilet, we will do all painting. DH will also replace the lights, and hang a new vanity mirror.

The only things we will contract out are the new flooring, and the plumbing of the new vanity sink.

We have picked everything out, and it will be about $3000 total. But we are doing most of the work.

I do all of the picking out (sometimes in consultation with a designer depending on what is being remodeled, like my kitchen, for example,) and most of the purchasing whenever I have remodeled. Since I use a contractor I get the contractor’s discount on all the items I purchase. I never go to Lowes or HD - I go to the supply showrooms.

Remodeled 2 bathrooms in 2006, did the big store showroom thing for ideas, looked locally for the fixtures, tile etc. and wrote down style numbers. Ordered much online at 1/2 to 2/3 showroom price and had contractor get bigger items. (I was not interested in shipping a cracked toilet back).

We did our master bath ourselves. Actually just did it a 2nd time.
Demo is fun!
And after last weekend in a hotel, glad we didn’t do marble floors.
Cold as ice!

Be aware that travertine is a limestome–it must be well sealed to prevent stains and water marks. May not be the best choice for a bathroom.

Well, the floor installers around here are putting travertine in mud rooms, entry halls, laundry rooms, and bathrooms…so they must have a plan. But thanks for the tip…I will check first.

@coralbrook‌ , I am doing the hall bathroom, fully replace everything, what should that cost?

Just because they do it, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea!

@partyof5 you can’t answer the question without knowing the square feet, just what fixtures you have, do you need a new or replacement exhaust fan and most importantly what your taste is. I had a client once who spent $40,000 just on tile for her kids’ bathroom. It was ugly tile too. You can spent $200 on a toilet or $2000. Most online sites say that a full remodel of a 40 sq ft full bath will run a $15,000 to $18,000 on average depending on your region.

Delete

Mathmom…so noted. Three fried so have travertine, and have had it for about four years…in mud rooms and bathrooms…with no issues. They love it and highly recommend it. But yes…I will ask about sealant!

Tile - Make sure it is not too slippery! Oh my, I’ve been at some hotels with lovely large marble tiles, but they were SLIPPERY when wet.

I’ve read you can get better “grip” by choice of surface and/or small tile size.

We got quotes for an 8x10 master bathroom that ranged from $18k to $55k. One contractor charged $1350/day in labor, not counting supplies and told me five weeks. Every other quote was three weeks. I redid the guys’ bathroom (kept tile, tub and toilet, replaced sink, vanity, added granite top, faucets, hardware, stripped wallpaper from unprimed walls, painted, made tiled mirror, added trim) and it was $2400. I hired a handyman for some of it, but painted, made the mirror and did the wall hardware myself.

We are still trying to decide what we’re doing. This has taken the better part of two years. Love those DC contractor prices…

party of 5: The cost of installation is pretty much the same thing…whether you are installing the 55 cent per square foot to Ann Sachs special special at $100 per square foot.

What are you doing in a tiny 8x10 bathroom that is could be as much as $55?! Charging labor everyday…whether or not someone is there …I’m sorry makes not sense.

Bevhills, the contractor got rave reviews and a big rec from our (very good, reasonably priced plumber who lives up the street). I couldn’t deal with their “time plus materials” philosophy. Too much incentive for them to not get things done on a timely basis, and when they doubled the time estimate, I was out of there.

We are going to take out the tub, replace w/larger shower, new toilet, vanity, tile for shower, floors, shower, half way up the wall, adding a cabinet in the old second shower. Will have a bench and hand shower. I have another quote that’s half of that which we will likely go with.

Our neighborhood resale prices would not support a $50k bath reno. If I wanted to spend that much money, I would overhaul the kitchen instead.
