I have a smallish narrow bathroom - vanity & toilet will have to be on 1 side (opposite small window & radiator) & tub/shower is on shorter adjacent wall. We’ve always had a mold/mildew problem in this room - have repainted it numerous times with mold resistant paint but it doesn’t help. I know we will put a better placed & working vent/fan in when we do our renovation, but my question is this: In a narrow bathroom, will it “close the walls in” if we tile up to the ceiling? My contractor thinks we should just go 1/2 way up the walls. (The tub/shower area will be fully tiled, floor to ceiling in any event.)

Sweet Dreams – Have you checked whether the vent/fan currently in there is a)hooked up properly, b) venting properly to the outside, and c) clear of debris? They do get gunked up and it’s amazing how often they aren’t really ‘venting’ at all.

As for the tile, I think I’d go with the contractor’s suggestion. You might want to hang a picture or change colors…and you have to think about re-sale. However, if you are determined, I would suggest a smaller tile with a fairly reflective surface, not matte, to keep the room light.

I agree. I would only tile part way up the wall. I’ve looked at hundreds of bathroom pictures while we are were doing our renovation (almost done, Yea!) and saw tons with walls that were tiles 1/2 way or 3/4 of the way but don’t recall ever seeing all the way to the ceiling except in the shower/tub area. The 1/2 or 3/4 tile looks very good but you definitely want to go with a neutral tile. It looks especially good with a white subway tile, IMO.

Some good places to go to see lots of pictures are:

bhg dot com (you have to pay to see more than a few pictures but I found it to be very helpful and worth the $15).

You might want to try a fan that turns on with the light. If you decide to go with tiling the walls you could consider using two different sizes and/or colors and further break up the expanse with some tile trim between the two.

houzz dot com is a WONDERFUL site! It enables yo to save pictures in an ideabook and include comments about what you liked about the room.

There are some bathrooms at houzz that use large light colored marble up to the ceiling and a lot of mirror on one wall. Like this one: [bathroom - - bathroom - - by Elad Gonen & Zeev Beech](<a href=“bathroom - Contemporary - Bathroom - Other - by Elad Gonen | Houzz”>bathroom - Contemporary - Bathroom - Other - by Elad Gonen | Houzz) If you can afford it, it looks great.

Thank you all for your suggestions. The photos on the recommended sites are very helpful.
