Bats! Anyone ever have to deal with this??

@morrissmm The link in #18 included this: http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/bats/contact/index.html
It suggests capturing the bat to have it tested. Might be too late for that info.

Also, it stated in the link, which is for the state of Wisconsin that bats can’t be moved during the breeding season which starts on 6/1 in that state. So, its quite possible that bats can be moved out of a house right now as its earlier than the breeding season. I guess I would check regulations specific to your location or contact a pest control expert who will know the regulations where you live.

Your husband should go to the doctor tomorrow. I don’t think it’s an overreaction in this situation. Many years ago, when D1 was a counselor at a nearby horseback-riding camp, one of her friends was bitten by a bat. The bat was trapped and killed and found to have rabies. The friend was treated and was (and is) fine.

We released the bat and now realize that we should have kept it. As is often the case, you learn about things after the incident.

Thanks for all your info and suggestions, public and private. Still not sure what to do.

According to Wisconsin’s bat page, you should contact your local public health department right away about the possible bat exposure. I’d call tomorrow and also urge your husband to go to the doctor.

you need to call a critter removal service that will find and seal the entrance/exit the bats use. bats are mammals and carry disease like rabies and bat guano also poses health risks. bats are super important to the environment/eco system…but you just want them living someplace else.(not in your house) and as rosed55 mentioned I would contact your doctor about close contact exposure.

most critter removal people will not harm the bats they will get them out and prevent re-entry. (also they should offer the removal/sanitizing of the bat guano droppings too)

Agree about a doc visit. And that I’d rather have bats in the yard the mosquitoes. I hadn’t heard zika was found in VT, but the prediction it would be up north by summer’s end.

My neighbor’s were getting into the house through the unscreened chimney. She’d call DH, they’d turn on all the lights except one room, where they’d open a window. It would avoid the light, go to the dark room, fly out.

You can light the attic space, which will discourage them from coming, but still need critter removal to clean out and block entry. Good luck.

PS, sorry for a little OT, but I also heard the zika mosquito is not nocturnal. This summer, you need protection during days, too.

We chased a bat out that came down our chimney once. We later read in the newspaper advice that you should get the rabies shot if this happens. I don’t know about that, but I would certainly do so if I had a scratch or bite that might have come from the bat. Rabies shots aren’t as bad as some of us remember from our youth.

Also, I am not sure that it is illegal to remove bats from a dwelling at some times of the year. I would check with local authorities about this.

My daughters both had rabies shots before going overseas for study abroad programs. The shots were expensive but not particularly painful (they said).
