My favorite intersection of the Beatles with my life:

Around the time when A Hard Day’s Night was released, I was about 10, and my “sophisticated” 14-year-old (a teenager!) cousin was visiting for a month. She, and her best local friend (a more distant cousin), opined one day that Paul was “sexy”. I had never heard that word before, and I asked them what it meant. It turns out, of course, that they had no idea, other than on a [ahem] visceral level. After much study and discussion, we all agreed that whatever “sexy” meant, “like Paul” was the essence of it.

I loved them as a kid and I am back in love with the Beatles as an adult!

“Two of Us” has become our traveling anthem on the occassions when I pick DD up from school and drive her the six hours home. We load the car, buckle up, pop the CD in, have a great big smile on our faces, and hit the road!

Husband has a big birthday in January and we are taking him to Las Vegas to see The Beatles “LOVE”. Don’t know if it was his choice, the the kids and I are really excited!

When I was a kid, about 8 or 9, in the day of top 40 radio, I would call my favorite station (jingle, “KJR, channel 95!”) and DEMAND that they play ‘Paperback Writer.’

Like nearly all the Beatles’ stuff, but especially…
Hard Days Night
All My Lovin’ (great guitar lick)
She’s Got a Ticket to Ride

And of course ‘Merry Christmas, the War is Over" by Lennon.
And why aren’t the movies ‘Hard Days Night’ and ‘Help’ on TV more often? For a hilarious depiction of the American teenagers’ rage over the Beatles in 1965, see the 1980s comedy film “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”

The older I get the more I value how incredibly talented they were. Some of those songs are really stunning, given their age when they were written. How could someone so young some up with “In my life”? And for sheer beauty, “I’ll follow the Sun”, “Here there and Everywhere”; and for exitement-“All my Lovin”–boy did we get a charge out of that one as tweens! There were a few real clinkers in my opinion, the top being “Octopus’ Garden” (ouch) and “Rocky Raccoon”–still can’t stand them. Not a fan of “I am the Walrus” either. I didn’t like them as solo artists, either, although I do like Paul’s “Mull of Kintyre”. I also saw them – Shea Stadium concert. I was 13, I think. Couldn’t hear a note. The sound system wasn’t up to thousands upon thousands of screaming girls! My observant dad noticed an armored car drive up into the parking lot and hurried us over to the edge of the row we were in to look down. We saw them rushing from the car into the stadium, and Paul looked up and waved at us! I thought I would die!

While inconsistent, some of their solo/non-Beatles work is inspired. I especially loved George’s later work on the Traveling Wilburys and on the Bob Dylan concert album.

My husband is a huge Beatles fan. We went to Liverpool as part of our honeymoon.
Favorite song for me is " I Will"
My hubby won djaying an hour on a popular radio station. I stayed up listening at home with my 4 boys, oldest six. They all fell asleep around me.
The last song he played was “I Will” which he dedicated to me. I sat there listening to that song with my four beautiful boys sleeping around me. It will be a memory I have forever.

Technically, I more of the Paul McCartney and Wings era than the Beatles era…but I have such fond memories of my father’s two much younger brothers playing all their Beatles albums. My siblings and I idolized them…they wore the very cool John Lennon glasses, one was a poet who lived in a ‘commune’ while at UT, they both volunteered and went to Viet Nam, they let us ‘drive’ their VW, taught us to play chess and basically treated us like we were cool (even though we weren’t). And when my father died, the poet wrote the most touching poem about him.

Can’t pick a favorite Beatle, song or album…but I still get to hear them all, all the time, because my daughter and her boyfriend now are the huge Beatle fans.

I can say…from the solo stuff, I’ve always loved George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord”.

Oh and get this. My GRANDPARENTS took us to see “Hard Day’s Night”. It was offered at a tiny Harlingen theater as a double feature with “Yours Mine and Ours” in '69 or '70 (by then, both movies were probably really old) and I remember vividly the looks on their faces as we sat through that Beatles movie. I teased them for years about it.

My mother is 66 years old, and she has always been a big Beatles’ fan…I remember buying Beatles’ albums for her for her birthday, Christmas, etc. One of her favorite songs was “I Want to Hold Your Hand” (I looked it up…she was 22 years old when it came out. I also remember her singing/humming to “Hey Jude.”

My dad is 13 years older, so he was always more of a big band/Sinatra guy, but in one of their photo albums there are individual pictures of my mon, dad, his three brothers and my grandfather all wearing Beatles’ wigs (from their matching bowl haircut days) and then there’s a picture of an actual Beatles’ album (I can’t remember which…I’ll have to look) in the middle of the page. It’s hilarious! My dad has always been quite the photographer and made lots of photo albums as we were growing up.

Oh no curiousmother! On this thread I am turning into the …grandmother? (See horrified face.)

Another sad fact: DS knows all the words to “I Am the Walrus” by heart. Someday I’ll have to cede the Beatles to him as I ceded everything else. Sigh. He sings it well, too.

Kids are relieved H and I have two complete sets of Beatles albuns; one for each. I even have John and Yoko’s wedding album with a picture of a slice of wedding cake!

Least favorite: Double Fantasy. Only because I still cry when I hear it.

LOL Mythmom! You a grandmother-type? NEVER!!! (and neither is my mother for that matter…she is youger-acting than I am…In a good way!)The Beatles are timeless!!! As can be attested by your kids’ love for their music. My 10 year-old D loves the Beatles and knows all the words to several of their songs. She hears their songs in the car of one of my good friends and fellow-carpool driver.

Favorite Beatle growing up was always Paul - John too, as I got older.

I can’t name one favorite song - there are too many. I Want to Hold Your Hand is the very first popular song I remember on the radio- used to go around singing it and swinging all my friends’ hands!

Favorite album - as a whole, probably the White Album, although most of my favorite songs are from others. Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper were great, too.

I saw the awesome McCartney concert in 2005 - was fortunate enough to have gotten great fourth row seats. He did many of the Beatles songs including Magical Mystery Tour, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Get Back, Yesterday, Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby, Back in the USSR, Long and Winding Road, Please Please Me, Blackbird, I Will, Helter Skelter, and Sargeant Pepper.

Wow! What a great thread! (If I do say so myself!). I’ve enjoyed everyone’s posts - I’ve wanted to reply to each one!

Heard “Back in the USSR” on the radio in the car today. I wondered if i should write in that one as my fave… Can’t pick a favorite - every time I hear a different one, I thnk it could be the best. So like a lot of you have posted, I thnk it depends on the mood. Same for favorite album. How incredible is it that they could have so MANY great songs that each one could be a fave at any given time by any given person.

What a gift to us all, huh?

“Birthday” ALWAYS gets played around here on birthdays. “Two of Us” for traveling also! I guess Beatles’ tunes are the “Soundtracks of our Lives”. Sounds corny, but isn’t it true?

I’m very disappointed that MJ has allowed the catlog to be used for commercials. I know Macca never wanted that (although it’s HIS songs which are the most “showtune” like).

How about “Tomorrow Never Knows” when you need to chill!

Favorite Beatle – John
Favorite Song – A Day in the Life
Favorite Album – Let it Be

I’m in a mixed marriage – my husband LOATHES the Beatles. One of the nicest things he’s done was buy me the Beatles Anthology and the book that went with it. He’s almost willing to go see Across the Universe. But “Love” is a dealbreaker.
