We burned the sheets when they finally came back. Seriously. There are no words.
My son never used the twin xl comforter we bought because it was always so hot in the dorm! He used the $10 fleece blanket from TJ Maxx that we chucked when he got home last week because it didn’t wash well. If you wait a few weeks, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Home Goods will have a great selection of twin xl/full size stuff
@somemom I love Company Store, I’m a big fan of percale sheets, and I like the quality for the price.
The bigger the item the less often it will be washed. There’s a chance (a snowball in hell) that a twin size might get washed while anything bigger is totally doomed. Especially if your kid is male.
We did full/Queen. However, I did make sure it was a full/Queen on the smaller side as they come in different sizes. I was glad we did as we had the bed lofted and the little extra worked out great!
My opinion…do NOT buy anything because you think it might be more useful after college. The reality is…the item probably won’t be useful for much of anything after college…or the tastes of the student will change.
Get a bed cover for now…not four years in the future.
Our kids both took the comforters right off their beds with them to college. They liked them, and they worked just fine on their twin XL beds. Neither used these items after college.
Plan that it will not be used after college and be surprised and happy if it does. The bedding at college get spilled on, is typically not washed frequently, taken on various road trips, is eaten on, played on, partied on, studied on, and who knows what else. The kids tastes change over time too. Get the best bedding for the moment with no plans for the future. I agree with previous posters Marshall’s and TJ Maxx have lots of twin XL sheets.
My daughter had twin XL sheets but a regular twin sized comforter in her dorm for 4 years. The sheets went in the garbage after graduation. The comforter is now on her full size bed in her apartment (just fits across the bed with no overhang but not a big deal since it is a platform bed). We took good care of the comforter - having it professionally dry cleaned at the end of each year. However being 6 years old it is showing some wear and will probably get replaced this year.
We only bought and buy washable bedding and only machine wash and dry all bedding. N
In their dorm room (and in my daughter’s current small studio apartment) the primary place to sit (for them and friends) is going to be on the bed. Therefore the comforter takes a beating. In my house, my comforter would last forever (until I got tired of it), because all it does it sit there keeping me warm at night.
I went the pro route on cleaning the comforter (which was machine washable) because my washer at the time was small and didn’t have a good bulky cycle. They also packed it up nice, which was convenient for bringing back to campus in the fall.
My D had a duvet cover for her comforter that could be washed separately.
In the summer I would take the comforter to a big machine at the laundromat and wash it thoroughly and make sure it was dry before I put it away in a plastic tote.
Marshall’s, Homegoods, TJ Maxx…they all have bedding at such good prices, you can afford not to overthink it.
While I prefer percale, my kids love microfiber bedding. Which is fantastic because Costco has a two-pack of twin XL sheets for $15.
when my girls were younger and shared a room they had single beds. They each had a duvet with cover which they used for about 10 years before they moved in to their own rooms and had double beds. Their duvets are still in perfect condition and my college freshman will pick out a new duvet cover and take that to college in the fall. They were very inexpensive IKEA duvets and they have lasted years. They now use full sized duvets from IKEA and they are 4 years old and still fine.
It is very easy to pull off a duvet cover and wash it. The duvets are also easy to wash and air dry in a few hours. Bonus is no need for top sheets.
Yes, get full, because if they move into an apartment junior year they will probably have a full bed
Macy’s has a sale on several Bed in a Bag and some comforter sets. Some are even in Twin XL. Use code MEMDAY for extra 20% off.
I’m surprised at full beds–every kid I know went to a queen size.
