Being black at Michigan?

I think that the blacks at Umich are more narrow-minded than anyone else. I’m a black incoming freshman and I’ve never felt discriminated against by the school or by any of my my peers. If anything, I feel embraced by a school that still supports Affirmative Action and by the best freshman class the school has ever seen. There have been a few ignorant comments on the Facebook page and many students were offended yesterday when a dining hall served chicken and waffles with watermelon (LOL), but those things aren’t racist-- And if you think they are, take it with a grain of salt.

Yes, people are ignorant- everyone is. I was the only black female and even the only black person in many situations on campus (visits, orientation, other programs), and in those situations I’ve felt nothing other than comfort. But I can’t speak for you, of course, that only depends on what you’re comfortable with.
College is about getting out of your comfort zone, anyways.

If you have any specific questions or you want an update from me when school starts next month, feel free to message me! Ann Arbor is definitely the place for you to escape past racial tensions and it’s very much so possible. If you’re considering attending, definitely apply. Good luck and Go Blue! :)
