Sometimes grant money is available through social services for education if you qualify for certain programs. You said you qualified for heating and rent assistance. Check with the case worker to see if there are any special programs in your area. You might be surprised what they’d be willing to pay. If not for school, sometimes for day care while you are at school.

I can understand that you want to start attending college full-time right now, but it doesn’t look like the money will work out just yet. Do think about completing your AA part-time so that you can continue to work, and then when you transfer perhaps you will be in a better position to attend full-time.
When you visit the community colleges, don’t forget to ask about any scholarship programs they have. Many do.
I think you should consider taking McDonalds up on the offer of being a manager for now. You can save up money for future school. Consider taking a few CC classes for requirements for the 4 year college. Good Luck to you and your family. For taxes, find a pro bono tax help expert near you and have them review your situation. Solution might be to refile joint taxes or for you to file a single return with no income. While getting IRS on the phone will be a pain, you can also keep trying this approach. The HoH idea seems poorly thought through unless there were some financial benefits.
Either way SNHU seems unaffordable and it seems like a better idea to enter a CC and the whole NH public university system.
And yes, try for the management position at McDonalds. It might include formal education aid, likely has scholarship opportunities, and don’t disregard the both practical and formal training you will get as McDs moves you up the management tree. Management experience would be great for either well … a management career … or as practical experience in your psychology studies. Hamburger U has lower level programs and I don’t think anyone would think poorly of someone who uses this as a springboard to further their career.
Once you explore all your options on financial aid, scholarships, programs for non-traditional students, child care assistance, etc, there may be other opportunities, but honestly, this year will not be a waste.
Anyone with Turbotax should be able to redo your taxes with married filing jointly and give you the difference. Some child care tax credits and other low income credits may change.
If you don’t owe money or get a larger refund, it would probalby simplify your FAF life to amend your return, you could put a note saying that you have reunited.
You can also file a no income return with your tax information and send a copy to the school. It is a similar situation to someone recently married in similar financial situation.
