<p>I think that a lot of it should come down to personal taste. If you prefer LA, go to LA. If you prefer Cal, go to Cal. The truth is that neither one is going to significantly affect your ability to succeed in life more than the other. This isn’t the difference between Cal State Podunk and Harvard, after all.</p>

<p>This is a little off-topic but I heard that both UCLA and Berkely now get around the outlawing of Affirmative Action by using bonus points. As an Asian-American (literally Asian, and American blood), would I have a better chance at admission to these universities by marking myself as ‘caucasian’ instead of ‘asian?’</p>

<p>I think it’s right to an extent, but it’s shades of gray. It’s not like going to Cal over UCLA is going to profoundly affect your life as much as the poster suggests, but I do think that it has benefits. Jobs? Not so much. Grad school? I think maybe a little, to be honest. Cal does send a slightly larger number of people to top schools every year based on some trends I’ve noticed. Is it enough to care? Nah. </p>

<p>UCLA has its good points as well. The cost of living off campus will be lower than in Berkeley, and the competition between students might not be that tough (but I can’t guarantee that).</p>

<p>I’ve looked at costs of housing in both Berkeley and Westwood. Bekeley is not more expensive. And competition is tough.</p>

<p>i think it depends which part of berkeley you live in… elmwood district may be more expensive than westwood.</p>
