Best Airline For Out-of-state students?

As stated, it depends WHERE you’re flying from.

If available, Southwest is a great option. Two free bags. But it might not be the cheapest if there’s little competition where you’re flying from. Beyond that, though, you’re going to have to just look up the different airlines to see who is the best cost for you. Make sure to check to all Bay Area airports (OAK, SJC, and SFO) and factor in additional travel costs since SJC might not be the cheapest.

Shipping your luggage is always an option. A person in the same internship program I’m in did this and it was cheaper to ship her two bags than it was to fly with them (she did not have a cheap flying option available).

UCSC gives some potential paths to travel from the three Bay Area airports:
[UC Santa Cruz - Transportation & Parking Services](http://taps.ucsc.edu/airports.html)

I never dealt with the airports because I live in the East Bay Area, but I took the long public transportation route (multiple buses and trains) that make up the majority of the ride to/from the airports. It’s not terribly difficult and the cheap factor is nice. But if you have to haul much, it’s a pain in the neck. If you’re traveling light and don’t mind a few hour journey, take the buses and trains. It’s more fun. I would recommend not doing so late in the day so that you have plenty of additional options rather than catching the last trains or buses of the night.

Zimride is another option if you want to connect with someone that would be heading that way. I’ve never picked up anyone from the airports myself, but I have given rides to the airports via Zimride because I passed them on my way home. Usually much cheaper than a taxi. All drivers have different amount requests for gas, though. They’re usually reasonable.
