Best bike lock?

Be really careful about this. You may be unwittingly increasing the demand for stolen bicycles and helping bicycle thieves profit from their crimes. There have been bicycle theft rings that will steal bicycles from one campus and sell them at another campus to unwitting students looking for cheap bicycles.

Stealing bikes is how a local group of " homeless" make money.
A vacant lot by a local grocery store was full of bikes until recently.
Nice bikes, some retail for thousands.
If the deal is too good to be true, it probably is, as the saying goes.

My bike is also a trek and didn’t cost much more than $500, but I can’t afford to replace it.

I like the way it looks, but I also am tempted to scratch it up/put duct tape/pearl jam stickers all over it.
My lock is similar to this.

Check and see if your college offers a rental or purchase program for bikes. My DS’s college does this. They rent bikes and sell bikes. At the end of the school year if there are any abandoned bikes, this student run organization takes them, fixes them up and either sells or rents them. Please note, these are bikes abandoned at the end of the year. Seems like a good solution.

DS has taken a “beater” bike to school each year. DH had an old bike that he fixed up and DS takes it to school. The bikes at his school (and others, I would guess) spend all their time outside in the weather. They do take a beating. He’s glad to have a bike to get around campus and he does lock it up, but uses a fairly cheap lock. Since his bike isn’t pretty and doesn’t have a fancy name he doesn’t worry about it being stolen. It did get “borrowed” once when he didn’t lock it up, but his roommate found it across campus.

18 and 20 - good advice.

My school does have people register bikes and other valuables with the police.
