Thumper1, great recommendation on SMU. I’m a fan of Cox Business…their accounting program especially is compelling. It’s def a school we’re considering…might be a little “fancy” for my kid. Seems to be where rich people send their kids to get married. Not a bad thing. My kid is probably a little more “junkyard dog” from the right side of town:)
I came on here for some out of box ideas. You are second person to post in a thread to name U South Carolina in last 24 hours. Oddly, just last week, a friend/business colleague shared that his daughter out of Atlanta is going there. Lots of synchronicity here…that’s three mentions in a week …the last time I thought of them, Lou Holtz was there:) I’ll research it. Great, helpful idea!
Thumper1, great questions. He is just finishing jr year and reaching for business because it’s the world I’m in and he kind of understands it. He’s a 35 Math ACT, finished BC Calc likely with a 5 as a Jr and won a competitive school’s Rensselaer Medal for outstanding science and math student. He is a kinesthetic learner and likes to build things…he has all the creds and in a smaller school like Olin, his “Renaissance” abilities check more boxes than at a bigger school with more specialists.
As for preferences, he thinks he prefers warmer and prefers not to go to snow. And he’s a kid. In long run, I think he’ll go southwest, south but not to CA.
For $, if the perfect fit is there, I’ll pay what it takes up to 70k or so, which means $ won’t be the eliminator. But, gotta get something for the payment. If it’s not something that is significantly better, I’ll advise him to take value and store cash for graduate school. So…if school is a career launcher and school/networks are worth the investment, game on. Not likely going to pay a fortune to go to a liberal arts school that prepares kids to go to law school for example. Most liberal arts schools are out
I don’t know Bentley. I’ll check that out. At face level, seems like a lot of money for a school I didn’t know about. What made you think of it for him?
Hamurtle, congrats on having a kid at Wash U. Gorgeous campus. great school. too close to be considered and…maybe a stretch unless ED. Indiana Kelley is a great choice and on list as a safety …has a weird investment banking path that some clients’ kids have gone down. It’s close enough to us and far enough away…the economics are reasonable at full rate and lots of people I know went there and then Kellogg or Booth for graduate school, especially if they planned on living in Chicago …my business partner’s son will be a freshman at IU SICE program and several kids from our high school band are studying music at IU’s amazing music program.
CMU Tepper is on a list but far down. Probably shouldn’t be. Another client’s son graduated recently from there. Fabulous experience and even was a member of my National fraternity with good experience. Plus, Pittsburgh is lovely:) Thanks for the recommendation. This is helpful!
momofsenior1, I’ll look into that. Good thing to check. Given I’ve know recent accepted and graduates, that would be a major shocker if it’s not a safety.
Hamurtle, Wharton is THE number one dream school. Would pay at full price. I’m not seeing a path. The numbers are there. The narrative doesn’t seem to be. Got told by some experts…too white…not unique enough. Needs a hook that we haven’t found. Would do a handstand for Wharton.
Re: international business…not sure that’s his game. He hates languages. Had to wrestle with him to get through 3 years of spanish. Could be the teacher. He’s weird about food too…I do not see him enjoying trips to UK, South America or Asia any time soon:)
Will spend some more time on South Carolina though…dang beautiful state. I’d love to retire there…stunning. My favorite little town from aesthetics standpoint is Greenville at dusk.
I just saw your question about Wash U - I wasn’t from Missouri (I went to high school in Omaha). Great school and yes, has a great business program but getting out of the hometown for a while is probably a good idea.
ED at Wharton. He should give it all he’s got. Forget about leadership or service. I think they are over-blown. What he SHOULD do is build upon what he already has. Try to get an award or two in music.
Also try for University of Michigan, Ross School of Business. Apply Early Action. His ethnicity will not work against him because it’s illegal in the state of Michigan to consider race/ethnicity in college admissions.
If you are admitted to IU, you will become a Direct Admit to the Bloomington Kelley School of Business for fall 2019 if you met all criteria below and have a completed IU application (with all application materials submitted) by November Indicated one of Kelley’s business majors as your intended major.
Earned the required test score*:
a composite ACT score of 30, or
an SAT score of 1380 (Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math).
Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.8 on a 4.0 scale in high school. We will use the highest GPA that is sent to IU Admissions from your official high school transcript. In most cases this is the weighted GPA.
OP’s DS would seem to qualify unless I am missing something.
What about Ohio State for possible merit $$? Well respected business program (USNews #15 fwiw) 38% acceptance rate for direct admits. They have some good scholarships that all applicants are considered for. “National Buckeye” brings it down to in state cost. They also have the “Eminence” scholarship, which is full cost of attendance for about 25 kids per year (requires additionall app).
Not really a fan of the school for a lot of reasons and sounds like OP’s son may not fit the California lifestyle/culture, but USC Marshall is a good business school plus USC’s alumni network is one of the most connected.
I might give the school another look, although they are now in the 14-15% overall acceptance rate.
At some point, you’ll need to decide whether taking a stab is ok, cuz someone on a forum thinks the ECs can stand as is, or doing some CYA, in case direct community service is looked for.
Imo, a fundraiser isn’t the same. It’s another music activity. And for people who bought tickets.
Your decision.
UMD has a good business school and has merit $$. Your S’s stats should make it a good target for admission. Agree with IU/Kelley recommendations. Have you looked at Northwestern? It’s a reach for everyone, but your S may find it interesting. Don’t think they do merit, though.
I like how you are working on the list from the excellent financial/admissions options that are realistic and then considering a couple reaches.
If you have multiple students in college at the same time, you may get a bit of FA, even at that income level. No promises, but run a NPC to get an idea.
