Best Cities For New College Grads

I just clarified with him that $400 is for the parking garage for a single car slot - he doesn’t drive the car anywhere in the city anyway because there is no place to park if you go somewhere in SF. It’s for long drive out of town. He really should sell that car!

This thread is just kinda mind blowing on rents everywhere.

I feel for all of our kids.

That’s how much it would be for my daughter to park outside Boston, she didn’t take a car since it’s easier not to drive. My daughter isn’t bringing her car to Clemson next year because it’s $100 a month and she feels it isn’t worth $1200 a year.

Yea, keeping a car can be expensive, especially if there is parking fee. Sometimes city dwellers can justify the high rent with ability to go car-less (with access to public transit, uber etc).

According to rentcafe, the average rent in SF is $3300 and average size is 700sqft. Some areas of CA have extremely high housing costs.

I suppose the small apartment sizes and roommate situations encourage young adults to minimize purchases and clutter. Or LOL - perhaps they stash more stuff with the parents.

So if anyone wants my daughter’s skis or my son’s kayak rack, let me know!

My husband’s favorite saying–the kids may leave, but there junk stays.

My son’s apartment is not 700 sq ft - it’s like a little over 500.

My S specifically chose to move to DC vs staying in LA so he wouldn’t need to have a car. He pays $2400 for a 400 sq ft studio. His sister pays $700 to share a 2BD 2BA 1100 sq ft apartment in a much less expensive part of the country.

DC rent is painful. S shares an old 2BD/1BA apt in Foggy Bottom. It needs renovations….but has 24 hour front desk and location is perfect. His share is $1600/mo.

Apt is small and dark. Have no idea the sq footage. I personally couldn’t live in it….but he doesn’t mind its size, age, or original seeming fixtures and floors.

But….We consider it a great deal.

Yes that is a great price. S is just off Dupont Circle and thought he got a decent deal (he was competing with a rich Georgetown student whose parents were prepared to pay $2700, but the landlord wanted someone who wasn’t a student and would stay longer). Although small, he has a fifth floor apartment with a sunny balcony that he can sit out on.

Sometimes I mention my very sharp 97 year old Dad. I recently gifted him NYT delivery on Sat/Sun. Yesterday when he called he mentioned this article and the Denver #2 rating. Fun to discuss it with him.

My 25 year old son is in Charlotte which seems teeming with young people to me. He has a number of friends who have moved there recently and I’m always meeting people who have recent grad kids living there. (We live about 2 hours away). I see it’s #17 on the full list.

Charlotte is on our possible places for retirement list!

We had neighbors here in Southern California sell their house with the intention of moving to Charlotte (1 of their sons lives there). They left the beginning of January for Charlotte and moved back to here in June and are renting a neighbor’s place. I think they jumped to move without really checking out how living there would be and immediately had second thoughts.

I have friends with young kids who did the move to Florida because the weather was better, COL much cheaper, etc.

They discovered that low taxes (at least in their town) meant zero support for their child who had some learning issues. They discovered that winter is lovely and summer is brutal. They discovered that the “anti-woke” factions- led by the governor- means teachers and other public employees are too intimidated to act appropriately in certain situations out of fear for their jobs. (Banning The Diary of Anne Frank as pornographic?)

And yes, they are now back in New Jersey with its high housing costs and high taxes and strong public schools which follow federal law w/r/t special ed and the occasional crazy “woke” statement by a public official which is balanced out by the majority of teachers, police officers, librarians, etc. who want to help people who need it.

So yeah- research!
