That’s funny! I did my undergrad at UCSB and my oldest went to UC Davis. If you think there are a lot of bikes at UCSB, you should check out Davis.
University of Utah.
There is a beautiful and challenging mountain bike trail that leads off in the Wasatch Mountains that starts right on campus.
SLC is bicycle friendly.
University New Mexico is another to consider. ABQ is bike friendly and there are bike routes that lead from campus to the bosque (forest that run along the Rio Grande) and to the open space areas in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. Don’t feel like riding 12 miles to get to a mountain bike trail head? ABC city buses are free with a UNM student ID and all buses have bike racks so you can bring your bike.
Lots of sunny days and mild winter weather means year round riding. (My husband commuted daily by bike to work in ABQ for over 22 years.)
One of my SIL’s graduated from Indiana U. This SIL rode for the junior national road cycling team from ages 15-19 and had brief career as professional road cyclist. including while he was a student IU.). The Little Indianapolis 500 is still tradition at IU.
If your child is into single track–
Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO offers access to the San Juan Mountains and the town is home to some to the oldest, most established mountain bike races in the US. Their mountain biking team is ranked #2 nationally. Bike scholarships are available.
Colorado Mesa College in Grand Junction, CO has primo mountain biking in the low desert and slick rock that surrounds the city. The college’s cycling team ranks #4 in the US. Cycling scholarships are available.
Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. Flagstaff is high in the mountains of northern AZ. The Arizona Trail (AZT) run right through the middle of campus.
University of Kentucky was voted most bicycle friendly campus in America by the League of American Bicyclists a few years ago. They give a free bike to each incoming student who would like one!
