Best LACs in the South

I’ll second Hendrix and add Austin College in Texas. It has an excellent reputation for placing students in med school and gives very good merit money.

The stellar school in that list is Rhodes.

I encourage you to search the history of CC for posts about Rhodes, and especially read the many sagas offered by Curmudgeon. His daughter had plenty of opportunities and finally selected Rhodes over Yale --financial aid was too good at Rhodes to pass up. She is now in Med school … at Yale!

BionicMan: Good plan. Don’t know about all of your choices but Rhodes and Hendrix are both known for very high placement rates into medical school, and both offer very good merit/financial aid. They’re both great schools, but with different campus cultures–Rhodes is more typically southern (including a fairly dominant Greek scene) and Hendrix is more alternative.

Centre is the best school in Kentucky and I’m naturally drawn to it from its location, same with Transy. If I got a bunch of money from Rhodes or Hendrix, it would make the decision for me. I know those are the two best schools are my list. I just don’t know which I would pick out of the two.

I have to second Wake Forest. I know it probably isn’t technically an LAC, but it sounds like a good match. :)

@silly

How is Wake for pre-med?

Centre
Rhodes
Washington and Lee
Davidson
Richmond
Millsaps
Birmingham-Southern
Sewanee
Trinity Texas
Austin College

With your stats I would say

Centre
Hendrix
Furman
Rhodes
Austin College
Southwestern
Trinity U
Sewanee
Millsaps

And yup. I visited every one of them. Some more than once.

All of them can put you in a good place for medical school. The rest is up to you. But you won’t be able to blame it on the school. And yeah. I do have a favorite one on the list. ;)

@curmudgeon

Regardless of where I attend school, I have to fight for my spot in med school. That’s understood. However, I think going to a more prestigious school can help you get there. If you don’t mind me asking, which was your favorite?

Read post 22!

lol. How are you xig?

And really. Other than Rhodes’ partnerships with St. Jude’s and the Med , their campus religion of volunteerism (important on apps), truly outstanding bio and chem departments, an involved and informed pre-med advisor , strong overall academics, and their beautiful beyond belief campus…nothing really stands out . ;)

A resident from Davidson that I keep in touch with from his days on CC calls Rhodes “Davidson-lite”. I don’t think that’s an insult …or that far off.

That being said Rhodes will not appeal to everyone. Neither will Sewanee. Or Centre. Or Hendrix. Or any of the others. But, if you are fan of LAC’s, you can bet that one of them will. Visit during term time. The schools on my list are all highly respected by the folks that will count come app time. Minute differences between them on somebody’s prestige scale won’t matter a whit. You’d be much better served picking the environment that you will thrive in.

Sorry Xiggi!

I tried talking my dad into considering it, but he doesn’t like the idea of me living in Memphis. He is a big Centre fan. If I got a substantial amount of money from Rhodes, then I don’t see how I couldn’t convince him. Even if I got the same amount of money, Rhodes is still worth considering based on what I’ve researched.

BionicMan. Rhodes campus is secure. My ranch-raised kid (forget little town, we live in the sticks) had a ball. I searched and found a post I made back 18 months ago. Here it is:

Show him this. And have him pm me. ;)

@curmudgeon

Thank you for your posts. I greatly appreciate them.

No need to be sorry. I am happy that Cur noticed this thread as his experience with this issue is hard to match. Again, I encourage you to read his past posts.

Oh, Cur, if I were doing any better, it would be a sin. I have yet to return to our neck of the woods, but I enjoy the alternatives offered in the land of fruits and nuts. Different BBQ and different politics, that is for sure! I hope New Haven is also a new heaven for the tuba girl.

Southern LAC’s? How could I resist? lol
Glad to hear you are doing well xig. The goat girl is living large in New Haven but I think the Northeast is wearing on her. She’s making noises about heading back south or west for residency. Vandy and UVa being tops on her list right now . Palo Alto has been mentioned. :wink: But, it’s way early.

@Bionic, I know a TON of kids at Wake that are premed. Like, literally almost every other person. Its challenging as a courseload, but doable and the science/med kids seem to love the departments and you can work in the hospital in your spare time. :)

Omg… Residency talks. Time is flying.

Cur- don’t forget my son in law just finished his residency at Vanderbilt and is now a Critical care Fellow there. Any questions, visits or contacts for an away rotation, just holler.
