My dad said very uncategorically that Dell and IBM were going to be the best laptops for me to get for college. I trust his opinion a lot, since he’s a really hardcore computer engineer and loves his job and reads a ton of books and in general is, simply put, quite the technology nerd. His opinion is based both on performance and on value. I ended up getting a Dell Latitude D610, which I’m extremely happy with. After my customizations, it ended up costing around $2000. I suggest getting a dock for your laptop so that setting up your workstation is a lot easier and more convenient, and it’s much less hassle to detach your laptop from printer, scanner, monitor, etc. when you want to take it to class and such.

What advantage does a latitude have over a Inspiron E-series?

Just a quick question, do you think the UCSD Administration would really crack down on us if we download music using their internet services??

Because that would really suck…

No… at orientation they said you get 1 warning, 1 stern warning, and on the 3rd time you get resnet taken away…
Just don’t be stupid… don’t use limewire, etc. It’s all about sharing external hard drives with people as well as encrypted bittorrent. You’ll be all good.

Anyways, as for laptops, I just picked up a Macbook Pro, and I must say, WOW. I have WinXP loaded up on an 8gig partition with bootcamp (you know, for those times you just need a windows program). I love it! The physical design is top notch, too… so much thinner than my bro’s HP… not that I dislke HP lappy’s - they have good customer service… hell yeah for MBP’s!

i got an HP with EXCELLENT specs for 1100.

if you don’t have a big music/video/photo library any basic laptop will do for college. you just need the basic word processing and internet.

…And be sure to get an eduacational discount! I bought my comp from the UCSD bookstore… got a couple hundred off plus a free iPod.

wait the ipod was part of the promotion or what? is it like a spend over $700 and u get a free ipod??

Hey, I’ve seen websites which are offering Dell laptops and Lenovo thinkpads at great prices in the $670-690 range. One of them is:

Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad R51e Notebook, Pentium® M 1.60GHz, 15" XGA, 512MB, 40GB, CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo, XP Professional, 802.11b/g WLAN (Model# 1844EUU) » only $699.00 + Free Shipping

Well,I’m comming from abroad so I really dont know if this would be a good way to buy my laptop in the U.S…Could anybody provide any info on such deals?(The shipment is directly from the company though).Thanks.

cool:

If you’re purchasing directly from the company (i.e. Lenovo’s website), you should be okay to purchase online (I just did this with a Dell) but you should first check out the deals available through the bookstore since they sometimes offer discounts on various manufacturers’ PCs that can’t be had elsewhere. Also, software is generally way cheaper through the bookstore with the educational discounts.

Well its not the comapny’s offical site, but they’ve mentionedthat the company will be shipping it directly, that should be OK rite?

I’d feel more comfortable with the manufacturer’s site unless you’re going with a major retailer (Circuit City, Best Buy, Costco, Fry’s, etc.). I’m very wary of purchasing on the internet unless I have high confidence in the retailer. This is especially true if the deal looks a little bit “too” good.

Check out Lenovo’s site. Also check out the deals through the bookstore on Lenovo, Dell, Sony, Apple, etc. There are other advantages to buying through the bookstore sometimes in the area of support and accessories.

Dell laptops are freaking amazing. I currently own a Dell Inspiron 9300, and it is great. I can assure you that i put it through a lot, considering its primary user is both a CS major and a gamer.

Oh yea, Dell support is surprisingly good. I broke a key off of the keyboard, so i sent them an email. I received a replacement keyboard within a couple days. Awesome.

I’d avoid macbooks for now, as it seems that many users are having loads of problems with these laptops.

Though Vaio’s are expensive, they are very durable. I don’t really think I need this good, but I won’t have to worry about needing to buy a new one while still in college, which with a lot of Dells tends to be an issue. I have a BX, which comes with a biometric finger reader for security, which is pretty cool to play with.
But, my dad’s best friends owns a computer store, so I got it for cost, making it the same price as a Dell off line.

I dunno about Vaios… I’ve had bad experience with both their durability and Sony’s Support. I guess it’s just personal preference… You get a dud and you tend to stay away from that company.

Anyways… my MacbookPro is wonderful… not experiencing any of the problems… I here they have new logic boards? I love being able to run OS X and Windows simultaneously… you can even copy/paste between them. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. They are so choice.
