Best or highly recommended free Kindle books

jonri- just started “My Double Life”, Sarah Rernhardt’s memoirs. Thanks for the recommendation, it’s fascinating. Just wish I could put it down, too much else to do!

Well…I would have recommended “The Eustace Diamonds” for the Trollope. It’s part of the Pallisers series but makes perfect sense on its own.

BTW, Kindle has some great free short story collections too.

Jonri–I guess I’m a sucker for English countryside stories (the Barsetshire novels)…

Oh, they are good books. I especially like “The Warden.” However, I think they are sort of the Trollope version of Dickens “Tale of Two Cities.” It’s a good book, but if you’d really like to know if you’d enjoy reading more Dickens, it’s probably not the book that will give you the best idea of whether you would. So, if someone asked me to pick ONE Dickens, I’d be more inclined to say “Pickwick Papers.” To me, it’s more “typical” Dickens. Does that make sense?

I do love Pickwick Papers…kids don’t seem to read Dickens much in high school–maybe Tale of Two Cities, but only one book…

Having finally gotten around to downloading the kindle book recommended, I am shamelessly bumping this thread. Any other suggestions?

jonri I’ve started reading “My Double Life” based on your earlier recommendation. The book seems like it will be great, but the font is driving me nuts because it’s not rendering the French words correctly. Do you know an easy fix for this? I plan to do a search for help on this on amazon, but haven’t gotten around to that yet.

No, sorry, I don’t.
