<p>Actually Levon Helm says in his autobiography that the Band recorded Long Black Veil because they “thought it was funny”…so their version, anyway, was something of a spoof from the beginning, though a pretty convincing one.</p>

<p>Speaking of those guys, one of my favorite lyrics is “Acadian Driftwood.” I particularly love the opening lines, which have an almost Homeric feel to them:</p>
