I believe that this is similar to USNWR but without the Peer Assessment factor.

Thus far I have yet to see any ‘insult’, as you put it, from any Penn followers. All that was in ECazndb8r’s remark was an objective restatement of the fact that UPenn is a private school, as opposed to a state school.

And no, nobody will insult you, we’ll just watch you and have a good time with the laugh =)

mathe, ok thanks for the info

hmm, my wife graduated from something called “Woodrow Wilson”, I take it that was at a state U as well, but I’m pretty sure it was in NJ though, so off-topic.

Pitt, PSU and West Chester

monydad, do you mean “woody woo”?

I dunno, did you mean “bore-ton” ?

Yeah, it is near my backyard. But it is a state middle school though.

My first thoughts were Temple and West Chester. Temple has an honors program with honors housing. West Chester is just generally a nice school in a nice area.

If you go a little further north and central Bloomsburg/East Stroudsburg, etc that would be a safety for most students.

Almost forgot to mention Kutztown, I took a summer semester there - I really enjoyed it.

All of the 14 Passhe schools have full-time tuition around $14K/year too.

^^^^^^$14K would be out-of-state (OOS) tuition for the PA state-owned schools (This does not include Pitt, PSU or Temple, which are not state-owned, but state affiliated) In-state tuition is about $7-8K per year.

QuiteType, I tried to find the difference between the OOS and in state tuition for U of Penn but couldn’t find it…it seems to be the same.

why is this?

I would imagine that PA taxpayers would not be happy knowing this.

give us a break

You’re right Quietype. In-state is even lower, I just checked:

In-State Tuition:
West Chester, (part of PASSHE):
Full-time 12-18 credits $2,777.00 x 2semesters = $5,554
Tech Fee Undergraduate & Graduate $103.00 x 2 = $206
General Fee Undergraduate Full-time Student $725.70 x 2 = $1451.40
Total: $7211.40

Temple:
Full-time Undergraduate including University services fee $12,424

Pitt:
Full-Time Per Academic Year (not including fees) $13,344

PSU - U Park: (not including fees)
Lower Division including Associate(freshman & soph): $13,604
Upper Division (most programs): $14,708

Be careful with the state schools, there are a lot of fees and if you live on campus the dorm costs rise each year, especially when you move out of the freshman dorm. My D was accepted to West Chester but when we got the package it wasn’t such a cheap deal. Actually Temple with some need based aid from the school was a better deal. PSU main campus and Pitt were financially out of reach and the branch campuses weren’t any better

And they said irony was dead after September 11…

Future Actuary–what sort of courses did you enroll in at Kutztown? What was the student population like? My only concern that at my High School, a lot of people go to Kutztown who don’t know what to do with their lives–they attend because they couldn’t get into another school. Is there a sizable amount of motivated students who go there? I do know someone who goes there, she is a decent student, and has overall been satisfied with her education. But I’m not sure if she is the norm.

Speedo–where did your daughter end up attending? What are her feelings on her current school?

I have a friend who will be attending Kutztown University this fall. She is very talented and motivated, as she qualified for national competition in forensics (speech and debate) and Future Business Leaders of America. She was also ranked in the top 10 of our class.

She will be a part of their honors college, and she is studying English. She has met some classmates and they seem to be like-minded. Kutztown does have a party reputation, and I have known other students that go there that have similar mindsets to what you are describing.

Overall, I think KU (and their honors program) would be a decent “safety” for you. It’s not particularly outstanding in any programs (although I heard library science was pretty good), and it has a reputation for “partying”. Finally, I believe that you will find motivated and intelligent individuals at any institution of higher education.

Good Luck

I’ve heard from someone who lived near West Chester that it was a horrible university but that’s just what he said. I also know someone who lives in Kutztown and she said that Kutztown is the STD capital of the US. So just a warning haha
