I haven’t read all of the pages, so I don’t know if I’m being redundant, BUT…
I hear that MIT sends you a tube with confetti once you’re accepted
I’ve also heard that when you initially find out about your status at Stanford through the internet, they ask if you want them to send an actual letter because they don’t want to waste paper. Many of my friends were bitter about that.
And if you get accepted into Cornell and decide to enroll, they ask if you want a free t-shirt. It’s a really really REALLY nice t-shirt.

This topic was the bets

Looking foward to December now. :)

My acceptance letter, this was 8 years ago and nominally before the school used computers for all of their records, offered a congratulations to somebody else on their admission to Madison.

^LOL oh my gosh that’s horrible! Did you get accepted to Madison though?

Stanford’s online rejection letter I heard can be harsh. They inform you they don’t want to waste the paper with an actual letter so they are just telling you online unless you request an in paper rejection or something.

^Yes, the only school that makes you send your recs in huge manila envelopes says they don’t want to waste paper…

University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business has pretty harsh rejection messages. I was first rejected then accepted about a week later, but when I first got my message all it said was “Unfortunately, your application was not competitive enough.” I cried like a baby during that week.

So do most students find out online first before they receive the decision in the mail? If so, is the decision on the schools web page??

Ace, this is my second time round applying to schools (graduated in '07, got in to 7 schools, couldn’t afford it, now I’m back in action), but in '07 about 50% of the schools posted their decisions online. They can usually be found on the school Website; you’ll need your user ID and password (the same ones you used to apply). I personally did not use the online decision feature because I wanted to get a letter like everyone else. I believe you can also call the Admissions office after the decisions are made and ask, but that could turn into an awkward phone call. haha.

Lol Stanford sounds intimidating, I hear it’s pretty hard to get into, but I’m determined! I will make it my goal to not get that harsh letter!

i opened my mailbox one day, and low and behold, i saw a big manila envelope from UMich…but…the name on the envelope wasnt me. so I called and asked…and they said they mailed it to the wrong address.

the very next day i got the rejection letter.

aint that a *****?

^ouch

I am not looking forward to these letters

Were most of the acceptances in big envelopes? Or did a lot of schools try to save paper? I want to prepare myself!

I am so nervous about all of this…I just want to get in ED…then nothing to worry about for the rest of senior year (although I’d miss out on the rest of app. fun ).

Mid-week of December through the Saturday in that week; month of
February and early March (RD LIKELY letters for academics),
and of course March 31 are the time periods you can expect to hear
back online/via envelopes etc.

Last year, here is what my letters/notification looked like:

MIT: I got to find out online in December. The formal EA notification comes
in the next wek in a tube and is filled with all kinds of cool goodies. The
TUBE is venenrated at home and will probably become a family heirloom!

Caltech: No online notification. Two days after I knew about MIT, I got
a huge envelope with the letter from Caltech. Sometime later I had another
letter telling me I could itnerview for their joint Medical Scholar program with
UCSD. Much later (I think in March) I got a Fedex with their merit award.

Stanford: It was unbelievable. I had applied RD and got a letter towards the
end of February - a small envelope. Thinking this was yet another administrative
hassle they were throwing at me I opened the envelope and read it
uncomprehendingly. Turned out it was a “LIKELY” letter! The formal
admissions letter came much later in March/early April in a large envelope.

Duke: I got to find out in late February via e-mail (I think) that I was a
“LIKELY”. Couple of weeks later I found out I was an A.B.DUKE. Formal
large envelopes came in late March/early April (I think).

Harvard: The Harvard admissions officer who handled my region called me
and said I would be getting an e-mail and later a letter in the mail offering
admissions. Very nice personal touch!

Princeton: Got to find out online on March 31. Formal large envelope came
a day or so later.

It need to suck to open up a letter and read the first to words, “We regret…”
Whats the point of reading any further?
I want to see a UNI send out a letter that just says
“We regret… well i think you get the gist. Better luck next time”

Bryn Mawr’s acceptance “letter” is pretty great. Although the letter is kind of standard, they called me personally to tell me I was accepted and sent me an online video of students saying “Congratulations [my name] on getting accepted!”

It was all really sweet : )

Cornell’s said something along the lines of “We know that this is not the answer you were expecting.”

NO DUHHHHHHHHH

How about a letter that just says

YOU FAIL.

^LOL.
Or just…

“HELL, NO.”
