Best/Worst/Okay Departments At Emory!

doryphorus:
Shoshana Felman, Claire Nouvet, [Emory University | Department of French & Italian | People | Nouvet](<a href=“Error 404 | Emory University | Atlanta GA”>Error 404 | Emory University | Atlanta GA)
Cathy Caruth, [Emory | Comp Lit | Faculty](http://comparativelit.emory.edu/faculty.htm)

I can’t say much about the French department from my own experience as I only had interactions with them through CompLit but my friends have been blown away with the department. I also know many of the graduate students in French and Complit and they are pretty great.

The department is inclined toward psychoanalysis and they’re doing some impressive work. Geoffrey Bennington in particular has done work on and with Derrida (before he died a few years ago) and continues to be one of the dominate voices in French critical theory (he also teaches at the European Graduate school in Switzerland in the summer). Shoshana Felman and Cathy Caruth are both world famous for their work on Holocaust and Trauma studies respectively. They’ve really turned Emory into one of the best (if not the best) places to study french philosophy and cultural theory in the country.
