Binghamton or Penn State

So is this thread about which has the higher statistics to get accepted or which has the better school? Well yes the “average” statistics to get into Binghamton are higher at the current point in time…is this the point of this discussion. You could just look up the latest statistics and answer your question. I thought the discussion was a more meaningful question about which would be the “better” school to attend. This is a much more complicated question. I’m more acquainted with Penn State and I know that it is a world known research university that has a law school, a medical school, a superb reputation in science and engineering. Regarding English literature, performing arts, education, etc., etc. I just don’t know. If any of you are seriously considering either school you should visit both and especially visit the “college” that you are considering.

Binghamton has a fine price tag for both in-state and out-of-state! My older daughter visited upstate New York during a few cold rainy days in October 2006 and vowed not to even apply to any schools in upstate New York. I made her apply to RIT and she received a great merit scholarship but settled on Penn State. She is an IST major and couldn’t ask for a finer education. My younger daughter (currently a high school senior) wouldn’t apply to Penn State because she wanted to go somewhere different and I respect her decision. Most of her extended family are Penn State alum (I wrote in an earlier post that we bleed “blue and white” – AND yes WE ARE PENN STATE!) She’s been accepted at Binghamton and we’re planning to visit as I think it may very well be a great match for my younger daughter.

My daughter is immersed in the college selection process and she’s having a very, very difficult time trying to determine where to attend. We still need to hear from 2 schools…but, please, both Penn State and Binghamton are very fine schools. If you have been accepted to both you need to visit and make your own decision. The “stats” of a school vary by college within the university system. The research and internship opportunities vary. On this subject I can tell you that my older daughter had her choice of several funded research projects…even after her freshman year she spent the summer at State College working with a PhD on a NSF (National Science Foundation) research project.

Choosing your university is a hard decision…if you are lucky enough to have the option of these two fine universities you should seriously compare everything…and, for your parent’s sake…don’t forget about the costs!
