Biology 2010 Prep

Everyone just needs to relax, stop studying, and go to bed. By this time either you know it or you don’t. I’m pretty positive we will ALL do fine.

it’s a phosphorylation cascade

Thanks!
@Azif: Good Luck!

RFLP- a type of SNP (single nucleotide change)
can be isolated with southern blotting
useful in identifying genetic diseases, because they are usually linked/close to the gene in question

I have issues understanding RFLPs too :)

RFLP and SNP… LOLWUT?
Jesus, I’m going to be studying all night. Thank god this is a morning.

@trav23- another example of good advice that ain’t gonna happen :)

@wanton- do u have the campbell and reece book? the biotech chapters are confuzzlifying, but you only have to read a few paragraphs and its pretty clear

I can’t believe it’s almost 9:00 PM.

Random question: what time is everyone planning on going to sleep at?

Yep that’s it!

Just another question, if the frequency of the G dominant allele is .5, what percentage of the population is heterozygous? How would you solve this?

Well its only 6 at my place so I’ve got more cram time :)

p = 0.5

1 - 0.5 = 0.5 ; so q = 0.5

Heterozygous: 2pq
2(0.5)(0.5)= 0.5 ?

Ans: 50%

Can someone check this? I can never do these correctly.

Going to sleep now…within the next 30 minutes at the latest.
@Lonestar23
Hardy-Weinberg!
p²+2pq+q²=1
p+q=1
p=dominant
q=recessive
2pq=heterozygous
0.5+q=1
q=0.5
2(0.5)(0.5)=0.5
50% of the population is heterozygous.

RFLPs: usually used in DNA fingerprinting,restriction fragments of different length (usually after treated (cant think of a better word) with restriction enzymes
what are SNPs?

p= .5 so q=.5
Heterozygotes= 2pq = .5, 50%
I believe…

Single nucleotide polymorphism.

Yeah, same here, it’s only 6 :slight_smile: so just gonna review and go to bed sometime between 12am and 2am. I usually go to bed around 12:30 or 1 anyways…I actually went to bed at 3am today and surprisingly haven’t gotten tired yet so I’m scared I’m going to crash tomorrow :(

Anyone have any ideas of what is most important to last-minute cram?

EDIT: Never mind. I just didn’t know it! :S

According to Hardy-Weinberg

P^2 (homozygous dominant)+2PQ (heterozygous dominant)=.5
P^2+2PQ+Q^2 (homozygous recessive)=1
Q^2=.5
Q=5^.5

P+Q=1
P=1-5^.5
(1-5^.5)^2 + 2PQ = .5
2PQ = .5-(1-5^.5)^2

Why is it so convoluted argh

Oh it’s convoluted cause I don’t get this ****

^ I…have no idea what that is. But that doesn’t say much. I don’t know a lot of things :x Should be a simple plug and chug situation, however…

haha between 12 and 2? u’re gonna be tired :slight_smile:
I’d study the labs. easiest thing to do and one is guaranteed to be an FRQ.
Gonna to the last 10 chapters of campbell and reece- mostly stuff learned before just in more detail, and we spent like 2 days on it in class.
If I have time, I’ll go over the molecular stuff that I liked, but prbly needs refreshing.
