Biology at BC

One plus for BC is that it is not known to be a premed ‘factory’ ala Johns Hopkins. Thus, the BC science majors, which are a smaller proportion of the undergrads than say Emory, form a pretty tight knit group. Advising is excellent. Note, however, that BC’s Core will require you to complete several writing-intensive courses. For many science geeks, this is a downside. OTOH, lostsa readin’ & writin’ will strengthen your Verbal skills, one-third of the mcat.

Med schools is ~40% gpa & ~40% mcat. Thus, premed wannabes should attend the college where they can maximize the former, while learning the material to ace the latter.

Attending top schools (HYP et al) only helps if you desire to attend a top 10 med school. For top ~ten med schools, a 3.8/35 from Harvard will beat a 3.8/35 from BC (nearly) every time. (Assumes similar ECs/recs) OTOH, a 3.8/35 from BC will have plenty of offers from which to choose, just fewer top 10’s.
