Car detailing! Guess what DH is getting for his birthday?
And a cake. But skip the card, because he will never throw it out. And don’t even joke about the storage unit. Just no.

^If he’s the type that likes to stockpile old magazines, I’d stay away from a magazine subscription.
No suggestion, but try this link for some humor.
In the search box, type in " decided material goods " to get the cartoon I tried to link to. Couldn’t link directly.
I think I read that he is not interested in a Kindle? Does he have an iPod? We got DH one many years ago, he had absolutely no interest and did his best to fake appreciation that holiday. He loves it and has for over 10 years. He is always messing with his iTunes to make more perfect mixes.
My husband whined and complained when he got his iPod also. Now he LOVES it and uses it every day. He has Bose sports headphones and they don’t short out when he runs.
I’m with lizard: a kiss, a card and a cake. Make s huge deal of the day but don’t bring stuff in.
ipod or ipad? Maybe buy itunes credits and let him download songs to his phone.
Thanks for all the ideas. I’m going with the car detailing! Unfortunately, his car went into the shop today and may not be back in time, but can still be done next week.
No more magazine subscriptions: we get 40 a month. And he keeps every one.
He had a storage unit, but when we put on our home addition, he moved it all back into our new basement area.
He has an ipod, MP3, boom box, and copies all his CDs onto tape or CD so as not to play the original more than once.
I’ll get a cake and a card (which, yes, he will keep), plus we will do dinner out with 2 kids. And, of course, a kiss.
I skip the card too.
Oh my God. Bless you for your patience and forbearance. I hope he appreciates you!
40 a month? Wow. You are a saint. I toss my Forbes issues as soon as I read them.
You are a saint. It seems like you have more resentment over the hoarding than you are willing to admit to yourself.
To be honest, I’m not married to one, but I have a relative who keeps free copy of wsj since the 90s and lots of other stuff. Resentment is an understatement. It’s an illness that is difficult to comprehend how it gets to that stage.
I see that you are in Michigan too; check out a gift basket from Cherry Republic, which is up North. Their items are absolutely delicious and high-quality. I’ve sent them for gifts and people always love them. They have both sweet and savory items.
PG–I willingly admit I resent his hoarding, on many levels. Not much I can do about it since he doesn’t acknowledge it or know why he has to keep everything. It’s in the basement so I don’t see it on a daily basis. 2000 square feet can hold a lot of stuff.
