Bitter Columbia Engineering Sophomore Rant

Why are you bitter about not getting into HYP? You got a scholarship to attend your current school, right? That’s a great achievement.

It sounds to me like you pursued HYP for so long (literally half your academic life) that it was a real (and possibly unexpected) blow not to get accepted there. And instead of picking the best fit, your parents pushed you to what they felt is the most prestigious. That’s unfortunate.

The truth is that the people around you are smart. They appear to love the City and you don’t. If you’re from a warmer climate, it could be more than the city location and school name that’s affecting your mood. Please see a counselor at your school and your primary physician to chat about how you’re feeling. Sleeping more than usual, skipping classes, and not being interested in what’s around you are important symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored. It could be depression and/or seasonal affective disorder.

Transferring isn’t a bad idea if your family can afford it. But try to find a good fit (academic, financial, personal) to go to instead of focusing on all the things you don’t like about where you are. But try talking with a counselor and your primary physician first. There may be other things going on that are driving how you feel, and if you address those you may be able to make your current school work for you.

Please keep us updated and let us know how you’re doing.
