My niece left our house in tears yesterday at 4 because she had to go to work at 5 (Macy’s) - definitely not her choice. Yes, we had finished dinner, but she knew she was missing lots of family time - the poker game didn’t break up till 1 am. So it was hard on her.

^^^
That is sad.

Macy’s could have restricted their T-day deals to onine shopping.

We all knew this sort of thing was coming (opening later on Tday) when stores kept pushing back their BF opening times…6 am…then 4 am…then midnight…and so forth.

I totally agree that it is not a good thing for retailers to push these openings back to T-giving day…I for one will NOT be shopping and I don’t think anyone I know will be either. All I hear are complaints (both personally and via the media) about this new practice.

BUT, then, this morning, there is a front page story in my newspaper about big crowds in stores yesterday. Lines galore. So obviously, SOMEONE thinks it’s a good idea.

I don’t get it.

I ran into a woman this morning at Bath and Body Works. Her whole family works in retail. Her dad worked 6 am to 2 pm yesterday, her sister and mom both worked 1pm to 8 pm yesterday and she had been working since 4 am today. Very, very sad. I’m one of those who never shops on big holidays. Not even movies. I’ve worked on holidays before at a shelter. Sucks but that was life or death. No one needs to shop on thanksgiving or Christmas.
Does anyone know if any store is having deals on the iphone 5s on Friday? I know Walmart is giving away a $75.00 gift card with the contract but they don’t offer our carrier.

^^^

Did you check out Target and Radio Shack? But are giving gift cards with purchase.

Got me a Timex GPS watch on Dicks sporting goods - 50% off with free shipping.

We went to Walmart last night to buy a bunch of the $98 32" TVs so we can turn our livingroom into a sports bar. We waited in a long line at the store, they ran out of the TVs, but gave us vouchers to order online at same price. Now I’m sitting, waiting in line online on computer, trying to finish ordering the TVs from Walmart…their system is bogged down and swamped now. They did just offer upgraded TVs though because they ran out of original store offered TV model. Supposed to pick up the TVs at their store in a couple of weeks. They’ve got my money now, I get to wait now.

Trying to decide if I should scoop up a NOOK HD for my D for $79. Would really like to get her an iPad mini but really shouldn’t spend the $200+. :(

The Detroit Lions are part of Thanksgiving. But they are supposed to lose before you eat the turkey. Now when do we eat the turkey?

Detroit lost to Tampa Bay Bucs a couple of weeks ago which permits eating turkey now.

Went to Home Depot at 1130 and was still able to buy five $0.99 poinsettias. They are good quality. Will keep 2 around the house, give one to d1 for off-campus house and have 2 for gifts.

Shop rite has boneless chicken breast for $0.99/# and bought 3 packages.

Also took advantage of toy sales at shoprite and cvs and bought stuff to donate.

My sister and mom each bought $49 RCA 7" Android tablets at Walmart last night. They are pleased with how well they are working today…we were a little skeptical about buying… afraid they’d be junk. They set up Netflix to use on the tablets and can watch movies in HD, and they can do Facebook on them…so far they are working perfectly.

Just went shopping at Coldwater Creek - 50% off for members of their One Creek program. I found a top I liked and the cashier said that by applying for a card I could get $25 off right then! Final cost - $6.!

Old Navy had 50% off the whole store and triple points if you used your Old Navy card.

Personally I avoid shopping on either Black Friday or the Thanksgiving holiday weekend like the plague and try to avoid doing any shopping whatsoever between Thanksgiving and Christmas but any stores that forces employees to work on Thanksgiving is off my list of stores to patronize. Actually I’ve never been in a Walmart ever, I have picked up a few things every now and then in the K Mart in Penn Station, I sometimes shop in Target but maybe only once or twice a year when we might need some random things and while I do shop in Macy’s Herald Square from time to time, mostly I am there to eat lunch in the Cellar…but never between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

We had dinner with friends on the Upper West Side of Manhattan last night and left around 11 PM, driving a friend of younger d’s home to Union Square driving down 5th Avenue. We passed people waiting on lines for midnight store openings at Best Buy and at H & M. We saw plenty of people out looking at the holiday windows at Saks and Lord & Taylor… I work in Herald Square area where people have been admiring the Macy’s windows since early last week, especially those strolling about to do so on a 65 degree day…

Maybe eventually, much more of this will be done online so that fewer people will have to work those days.

I did all my shopping online over the last 2 days. No lines, no crowds…great deals!

Today is the first black Friday I’ve been off in YEARS and I admit to feeling a small pull to go out somewhere and buy something.

Instead, I waded through our STUFF piled high in our entry hall displaced from our mudroom into laundry room construction fiasco. Boots, bags, umbrellas, cleanings supplies, etc etc all looking for a new temporary home till room is complete. Good way to kill an afternoon.
Bonus is that DH can now set up our fake Christmas tree in an open uncluttered room.

I did satisfy my shopping urge on Amazon - a little black and decker 3 cup chopper for DH the cook for $21ish and a “Big Bang” board game for some friends.

Actually, shopping today was no big deal. Old Navy had a long line, about 10 minutes wait, but nothing at all in the other stores we went to. We waited until after noon to venture out.

Thanks mom2Collegekids for the info. I wound up going to target and was third in line, waited 45 minutes and I was still third in line. They only had one person in the phone department, and they were working with the same person for the entire time. They had a system where you go on the list and then can shop in the store while you wait your turn. When it is your turn, they text you. It is now about 8 hours later and I am still waiting for my text haha. In the mean time, I went to Best Buy Mobile, got the phones finished the rest of my shopping and am back home
Worth the 25.00 difference in price.

I ended up buying one of the Nook HD for $79 - just couldn’t justify spending the iPad prices right now -D will not be expecting it and I think she’ll get use out of it until she can afford her own iPad.
