Actually, it comes from the Arabic version of the same word. Its not an African name, its an Arabic one.

@ Ecliptica: WHOA! You actually know two kids named Lemonjello and Orangejello? That means YOU’RE the Friend of a Friend (FOAF) in the Urban Dictionary!

Urban Dictionary: FOAF;

My friends find the whole “making up names” trend utterly ridiculous, whether the parents be black or polka-dot.

Shaquaylanisha Lynn- What do you want to bet that that’s someone’s name? I know a girl named Tishawndra. You should hear substitutes try to say her name. Tis-wan-dan, anyone?

lol what’s the name of that song, anyway?

I personally feel this thread is treading very close to the edge

Why do you say that?

making fun of names used by members of a racial or ethnic group is racist - that’s why

I remember watching Maury a few years ago and there were some 13-16 year old girls who wanted to have babies. I don’t remember the names they wanted for their children, but they were pretty strange. I guess it shows that 13 year olds who are sexually active with adults aren’t the smartest people.

Political correctness is so overrated these days.

People just need to chill.

I don’t think talking about ridiculous names is racist. Ditto Jonathan.

I know a girl named Kynnadeigh. She’s not black, but her parents do have a cruel sense of humor.

the subject of the post is Black names. What if someone did a post titled Jewish names?

Apparently there was a girl called S***head. Pronounced Shuh-teed. No joke. I don’t know her race.

I knew this African girl named Fart un Ali ROFL

===
“Princessbell, I know two kids named Lemonjello and Orangejello. It’s not pronounced Orange-Jello, so you can’t exactly tell unless it’s written down.”

Hey, I can imagine that. leMONjell(o) and oRANge(lo), the parantheses indicating a key/tone/note/accent/emphasis/whatever musical term below the lower case. How do they spell it?

I started this thread out of curiosity, like the origins of the French-sounding prefixes.

But given the great disdain American society (of all colours, even Blacks) has for ghetto culture, why do some Blacks perpetuate their own marginalization by labeling their kids as products of the ghetto? And why do we identify Blackness with ghettoness (which is tied with poverty, lawlessness, ignorance, and violence).

Read the book BLINK by Malcom Gladwell, it is a superlative book that talks of the unconcious mind and I’m sure you will find it quite intriguing Chris.

nbachris I think it’s just a game of association and stereotypes that people still play these days…

Good lord, Jonny K…

FREAKALEAK!

Oh and African names are all over the place. Let’s see…Fola, Chukwudi, Odochokwu, Odochi, Surafel, Chizaram, Ezine, Acuna, Uche, Haulda, etc… and almost all of them-Nigerian at least-have a meaning

They can sound just as ridiculous and you probably wouldn’t be able to tell

I couldn’t agree more with spikemom.

It skirts very close to racism.

Jonathan: Incase no one already told you
Freak a Leek - Petey Pablo

Dutch History Lesson

'When Napoleon invaded the low countries and thereby inforced napoleonic law and all that jazz… one of those laws was that everyone needed a surname.
They only thought this was temporary and this *ed the dutch off and so many of them named themselfs comical names such as:
Naaktgeboren = Born Naked
Pannekoek = Pancake
Poepjes = Little *s
Piest = Urinating
Rotmensen = A s s h o l e s
Schooier = Beggar
Spring in het Veld = Jump in the Field
Suikerbuik = Sugarbelly
Zondervan = Without Surname

just to name a few.
One person may name their offspring ‘Shaniqua’ or ‘LaRhonda’ … but atleast their names die with them… these dudes are stuck with it "

um…I hope this thread is not indicative of the feelings CCers members have toward African-Americans. Due to most of your affluent backrounds I doubt if any of you even knew someone with a “black name” .
In terms of ‘ghetto’ sounding names I don’t see how Latisha is worse than Carlos or Alfred since hese names are indicative of culture, unless of course some cultures are inferior to others. As intelligent as the members of CC I am sad that you hold these cultural prejudices , since likely you will be the leaders of the future .
As a ‘black’ my rationale for the ghetto names is because it is reflective of our culture. We have no ancestry/identity to speak of so we create our own.
I think these names are a direct result of the vicious legacy of slavery-which took the names of the African chattel , so we must create our own.
