Black professor regrets comments critical of white students

Shrink, it appears it came from an Associated Press story (reprinted in Huffington Post) and/or in a FOX News report.

“Why is white America so reluctant to identify white college males as a problem population”

^That was her full tweet

I assumed she was talking about white frat guys. We’ve had a few discussions about them.

If she is talking about fraternity men, then she is wrong that anyone has been reluctant to identify them as a problem population.

That’s certainly true, Bay.

For that matter, I’ve heard plenty criticizing white men in general, so I agree that she’s wrong about the reluctance to identify them.

But aside from somewhat rude terms, I guess I don’t see how what she said is so different from typical calls for black people to take responsibility for the problems of black people, etc. I’m a white male myself, and I don’t see the big deal here. I also suspect that some white males will have no problem taking her course, if they hear it’s interesting.

I think her statement about white America’s reluctance is ignorant and uninformed. As a white American, the 18-24 age group for males (of any color) has always been seen as potentially problematic. So I think she must be saying something else.

I’m still waiting for someone to tell me what her other quote about white masculinity means.

@Bay; yes; That ( in #41) is what I found on this CNN link

http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/13/living/feat-boston-university-saida-grundy-race-tweets/

And I think it was @ucbalumnus that made the reference about the relationship between race and alcohol related incidents on campus. SOOOO sorry if I’m wrong.

This is the closest I could come, which is actually a study about binge drinking, and it’s relationship to harm on campus.

I feel like I’m using the dreaded “Esplande’” ( I’m sure I spelled it wrong) SAT extra points paper!

Within academia, most of the criticism against patriarchy, and white men in general, is done by white professors, many of them men. Quite a few of them teach at elite universities which were the original focus of CC and this forum. Yet I don’t see a major outcry on CC to get rid of them. Like I said earlier, the only reason this is being talked about is that these comments (and I agree they were stupidly provocative) were done by a woman of color.

I think only white males have a right to have an opinion on this, and as a white male who doesn’t think this is a big deal, my opinion should bear the most weight. Right?

No, because some of us are mothers of white males, and don’t anyone hurt our babies.

Re: #47, race, and alcohol

It is just that white people are more likely to be alcohol users than black or Asian people. See figure 3.2 on page 30 of http://archive.samhsa.gov/data/NSDUH/2k10Results/Web/PDFW/2k10Results.pdf .

Of course, this does not mean that one can assume any individual’s alcohol use by his/her race.

“I’m still waiting for someone to tell me what her other quote about white masculinity means.”

– I suppose the only way to find out is to take her course. But since quite a few people believe she shouldn’t be teaching, then we may never know.

I don’t see how her comments are any different to white people referring to young black males as thugs or by saying the black community has an absent father problem.

from Shrinkrap’s link in #47

Also, where does she get off blaming slavery on white people?

Some BU white males might be willing to gamble that this is one professor who is going to lean over backwards To be fair, maybe more than fair, in grading and teaching style to win good reviews from students, particularly from white males.

I assume she is on tenure track but doesn’t have tenure yet so her future at the university is still an open question.

With a Twitter feed like hers, I wouldn’t mind hearing more of what she has to say.

Shrinkrap - thanks for that link.

Bay - I’m pretty sure the sky isn’t falling on our white sons quite yet.
