For that matter, I’ve heard plenty criticizing white men in general, so I agree that she’s wrong about the reluctance to identify them.
But aside from somewhat rude terms, I guess I don’t see how what she said is so different from typical calls for black people to take responsibility for the problems of black people, etc. I’m a white male myself, and I don’t see the big deal here. I also suspect that some white males will have no problem taking her course, if they hear it’s interesting.
I think her statement about white America’s reluctance is ignorant and uninformed. As a white American, the 18-24 age group for males (of any color) has always been seen as potentially problematic. So I think she must be saying something else.
I’m still waiting for someone to tell me what her other quote about white masculinity means.
And I think it was @ucbalumnus that made the reference about the relationship between race and alcohol related incidents on campus. SOOOO sorry if I’m wrong.
This is the closest I could come, which is actually a study about binge drinking, and it’s relationship to harm on campus.
Within academia, most of the criticism against patriarchy, and white men in general, is done by white professors, many of them men. Quite a few of them teach at elite universities which were the original focus of CC and this forum. Yet I don’t see a major outcry on CC to get rid of them. Like I said earlier, the only reason this is being talked about is that these comments (and I agree they were stupidly provocative) were done by a woman of color.
I think only white males have a right to have an opinion on this, and as a white male who doesn’t think this is a big deal, my opinion should bear the most weight. Right?
I don’t see how her comments are any different to white people referring to young black males as thugs or by saying the black community has an absent father problem.
Some BU white males might be willing to gamble that this is one professor who is going to lean over backwards To be fair, maybe more than fair, in grading and teaching style to win good reviews from students, particularly from white males.
I assume she is on tenure track but doesn’t have tenure yet so her future at the university is still an open question.
