Bone Density- Seeking Info from Y'All!!

Try drinking or eating full fat milk or milk products. I like the full fat FAGE Greek yogurt. I think you need the fat to utilize the vitamin D. (Can’t remember where I read info about that… But it makes sense)

Re-opened thread.

Yay!!! Thanks @MaineLonghorn!

Just to update this thread. I had the one Prolia shot and declined to continue. My dr. was OK with that. She said in 2018 some new meds are coming out, but it sounds like a pretty pain in the butt regimen. I think it is an infusion once a month for 6 months or something like that. She seemed to think it would be good for me and should build back some bone. I’m not sure I’m going to do it. I have some time to consider it and maybe delay. I get another bone density test next May.

Fingers crossed- no broken bones or falls in quite awhile. I’m taking my calcium and Vit D and that is the only medication I take for anything (except my Flonase in the fall for ragweed allergies.)

Fingers crossed, MOfWC. Watching this thread. Will have to deal with bone issues soon, I have a feeling.

An updated guide from the Mayo Clinic:

Is this the new drug?

I don’t think so. The one she talked about was a monthly infusion- not a daily injectable.

Curious what it is. I know that infusion bisphosphonates have been approved for IV infusion, but this sounds like it is something different.

Good timing for this thread to reappear. I just got the results of my bone scan. My hip and neck stayed the same, spine got a little worse (but almost within the margin of error), but my forearm improved 7%. Given all that I do, I was hopeful that there would be some improvement, but I suppose being stable at my age is a good thing.

I’ve been reacting to Vitamin D lately so haven’t been taking it as religiously. I’m due for a visit to the specialist. I’m also not taking any drugs right now.

What is your reaction to Vit D–so far I haven’t noticed any reaction but would like to know what to be watchful for.

Upset stomach, GI issues. The first time it happened I changed brands, and all was good for for about 18 months. Then it started again. I might have gotten a bad batch.

@MomofWildChild care to explain why you discontinued prolia after one shot?
My 88 year old mother had two shots and after the second developed a break out of pustules on her Palms and torso. Dr saw her immediately and discontinued prolia. She said she had never seen the reaction,

I just felt sort of “off”. I’m a competitive runner and pretty in tune with how I feel. I felt sort of achy and tired a lot of the time. Nothing terrible, and if I really thought the Prolia was essential, I would have put up with it, but I am just not sold on much of this stuff.

I’ve had three Prolia injections so far and seem to have tolerated them all fairly well. No side effects I can point to.

Just back from the endocrinologist. I liked her - she was incredibly patient, and explained in great detail my (osteopenic) test results and various options. She said taking a half dose of Alendronate was one option, but didn’t push it, and was ok with me waiting, taking calcium and D3, and doing another scan in 2 years. According to the risk calculator she ran, I am still considered “low risk” of fracture. Given that, I don’t think it makes sense to take on the risk of taking a drug at this point.

I know I am kicking the can, but I think it’s the right move for now.

I am thin, exercise every day (I run every day, some weight work for my shoulders), eat well. I have taken D3 for a while, but haven’t tolerated calcium all that well, so I 've given up taking it in the past. I’m going to take the calcium religiously now (the doctor recommended a calcium supplement with magnesium that I might tolerate better), and hope that some less risky drug is developed in the next few years … And keep running - the doctor was enthusiastically supportive of that.

jrpar – your doc sounds like mine. I pretty much got the same advice.

Good advice!

I’ve never had a bone density test so this thread has me wondering. Are they something one should have at a certain age? I’m 64.

Its not something my doc has mentioned. But I hadn’t had a mammogram in many many years and he never suggested it till I asked at my last appt.

I would think that most women 60 or older should have one, if not earlier.

I thought I had mine at about age 53 for the first time (which means they probably said do it at 50)!
