Bone Density- Seeking Info from Y'All!!

Yeah, @fireandrain is correct. I take a multi-vit (with Vit D and calcium) in the AM and a calcium tablet in the PM.

@abasket, in my case, when I called my gyn for results, I got from one of his staff: “Oh yeah, everything is fine, just keep doing what you’re doing.” When I called again the next year (I don’t remember why I was able to have the next one only a year later), they said the same thing, and that time I asked for my numbers. I blew a gasket when I heard them.

My gyn did tell me that lifting weights over your head “stresses” the entire spine. So I do a lot of lifting heavy things over my head, rather than using the machines.

Yes, 10 years was way too long to be on Actonel. Once again, my gyn . . . . (who was great when I delivered S2 but is not so great with old women, IMO. I really need a new one.)

I think (at least I hope) MiamiDAP was being facetious.

My wife started Reclast yesterday

<a href=“Reclast: Uses, Dosage & Side Effects - Drugs.com”>http://www.drugs.com/reclast.html</a></p>

I just read all the possible side effects. I’m not willing to risk the side effects for the possibility that I might develop problems in the future. They don’t know enough yet, and I am not willing to be a guinea pig! The question I have for myself is if I am concerned enough to make the exercise and dietary changes I need to to help prevent any more bone loss…

How would one get a referral for a bone density scan if she did not have a broken bone? Just curious.

Bone density scan is considered a standard test for “women of a certain age”. I really don’t remember the age the doctor said but I had mine starting around age 50-52. The NP looked at my current one and commented that being overweight at menopause helped keep the bone strong, but I could start to loose the weight now without ill affect :)

Thanks, Singersmom. I always thought that it is only done if there are risk factors present in addition to being of certain age.

I thought you were supposed to get a scan at 50. I put mine off a few years since I thought it had no relevance to me. It’s SO easy to ignore since you don’t feel like anything is wrong.

My wife broke her foot in May and it still has not healed. I do not believe she had any other choice but to try Reclast. She had taken Forteo for 22 months but it was not successful.

This confirms what my doc says - no risk factors, no scan until 65:

http://nof.org/articles/743</a></p>

Good luck to your wife, tom1944. I hope the Reclast works well for her.

Thank you. She has been through a lot. These medicines are a double edged sword she has had to take various medicines for the past 30+ years to combat her disease but over time they cause serious other issues. She is now taking medicne to fight the conditions caused by other medicine.

I always heard that being heavy was protective against osteoporosis, too. At least, that was my excuse!

(JK, of course, being heavy does set you up for other problems. I do love the story about lifting weights and getting the disease under control. )

tom1944, has she had to take steroids for some dastardly autoimmune thing?? It’s not uncommon for women who’ve had to do that to develop osteoporosis later in life.

VeryHappy yes prednisone for years. Could not have survived without it. We were aware of the risks but really there was no alternative that worked.

bunsen, my doctor said I was eligible for a bone scan one year after my last period. My only risk factor was that I am slender. Insurance covered it.

I would want a baseline screening a year after last period. The test takes about 10 minutes and you don’t really even get undressed.

The only risk factor I may have is a somewhat early menopause - 45 ish. Not fat or thin, no known family history, etc.

tom1944, ya’ do whatcha’ gotta do.

Thanks! Can’t wait for that last gift form Mother Nature. Then I’m going to march into my doc’s office and ask for a scan. I’m worried that I need to keep an eye on the issue because as a toddler I had rickets (talk about enduring that cod liver oil torture!) and have been consistently vit D deficient until I began taking supplements three years ago. Other factors… I’m neither thin nor heavy, and have never had a (diagnosed) broken bone.
