Save the money for retirement. Save the money for retirement. Save the money for retirement.

When your friend is in his or her 60s the money will look real good after several years of “safe” investments. Now that my spouse and I are at that age, the money we saved and didn’t use for splurges makes us feel more comfortable as we begin to think about winding down from our retirement jobs in a few years and head into real retirement. We think that we will be able to stay in our current condo and possibly buy a second place in Hilton Head. That’s possible because we didn’t use our excess funds for expensive vacations (although we did buy several timeshare weeks) or expensive cars that will only last a few years.

Having said that, I do really, really, really want to buy a Lexus after many years of Isuzus. Alas, it ain’t going to happen.
