Brag about your "lesser known" school!

Just to reiterate my original support for Cal State Monterey Bay! Nationally recognized Service Learning, Brand new Library, Great Professors at an up and coming university which is just 15 years old. Did I mention the LAC size and the CSU price??

List probably needed trimming, but criteria is suspect. Rose-Hulman on your trimmed lists – yet has been No. 1 among engineering schools (without advanced degree) for 10 years on USNWR.

Seattle University is missing! I think this list is awesome

hmm–also, maybe, Louis and Clark in Portland, Oregon

It’s Lewis and Clark and yes, it should be added to the list.

My eldest son went to Marlboro College in Vermont back in the late(?,entered in '95) 90’s and still sees many of the guys he lived with! He was Best Man in one’s wedding and just recently received a “head’s up” about a possible job with a company that another just joined. It’s tiny- 300 students, scattered all over the world when they’re not in VT- and is nestled among sheep fields in a gorgeous mountain setting. He is a brilliant young man, but the true, “Absent-Minded Professor” and they understood about things like that. He applied ED and it was the only school he ever considered as an Undergraduate. His 14 yr, younger sister will be attending one of those “Ohio gems”, Cleveland Institute of Music", which is slightly smaller than her high school with a population (undergrad+grad) of around 420. Heaven only knows where the youngest boy will go, or IF he’ll even get out of high school!!

Just a quick note about the list. Beaver College is now Arcadia and it is in Glenside, PA not Beaver, PA. My D looked at it a few years back. She attends Dickinson College & is quite happy there. I must say, that whenever I visit campus & she introduces me to her profs they REALLY know her! That’s something you won’t find at the bigger, better known schools like my alma matter U of Pittsburgh!

Yes, that’s true about Arcadia University no longer named Beaver College. I know someone who is a professor there and he knows all his students by name. Recently, a group of alumni from his department visited. He knew them all and was immensely proud of their accomplishments. He actually said they were like another family for him, and he was like a proud papa!

That doesn’t sound like Beaver College. It sounds like Geneva College.

Geneva College is in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.

This seems to be a valuable thread. So I’ll add a new upcoming state university which since 1857 has never rejected any qualified applicant but this year actually turned away 4000 qualified applicants.
This is San Jose State University in San Jose, CA. Due to its proximity to Silicon Valley its Computer Engineering program has become rock solid and it has moved to the top 5 in US among colleges with BS and MS only.

It has a good business and other Engineering programs too. Check it out.
[url=http://www.sjsu.edu/]San Jos

Son went to SUNY Maritime College and graduated last year with a Mechanical Engineering degree, a license in the US Coast Guard (Third Assistant) and commission in the USN (now a LTJG). He will be assigned to a nuclear submarine this May. This school is very inexpensive compared to most (even though we were from by Virginia we paid NY State rates), gave him the chance to live in NY City, travel to Europe three summers (summer sea terms), and taught him about leadership. Can’t beat it!

SUNY Maritime is a great school recommended by many NY GCs for those kids who want a military program (althought it does not have a mandatory enrollment, only if you sign up for the optional Coast Guard or Navy programs, which provide some scholarships). And, the brave Captain Philips, of Somalia fame, is an alum.

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

Some highlights:
Voted “Most Beautiful Campus in Wisconsin”
Strong focus on undergraduate preparation
Largest Division III marching band in the state
Service Learning required for graduation
Huge numbers of undergrads do research
Most students studying abroad than any other WI school
Success in getting students Fulbrights

Actually, I believe Captain Phillips graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and not SUNY Maritime.

Have a question to this crowd:

Has anyone had their child transfer from one of the better known schools to one in any of many lists in this thread? That is the person who may be able to offer a great perspective.

I know someone who did the reverse and regretted the transfer (up to an Ivy) a great deal.

I transferred from a top 60 school to one of the schools in the list. Much better fit for me, and I saved my parents over $100,000.

Yeah, Philips did go to Mass. Maritime.

New College Of Florida: students there have the ability to design their own curriculum. Very small public school. VERY GENEROUS FINANCIAL AID!

St. Mary’s College Of Maryland: Maryland’s Honors College - I think that should speak for the quality of education at this school. Also the sailing team is a national powerhouse and the location by the St. Mary’s River is gorgeous. If you’re into history, St. Mary’s City is the 4th oldest settlement in the US.

The University Of North Carolina At Asheville: One of the hidden gems of the UNC system. Also a public, inexpensive school next to the Great Smoky Mountains. Has a great general education curriculum.

The College Of New Jersey: Small inexpensive public school in New Jersey, lost in the shadow of Rutgers but offers probably the best education in New Jersey in terms of personal attention and smaller classes.

AND OF COURSE THE SCHOOL IM GOING TO NEXT YEAR:
Clemson University: Underrated school (because of its in the middle of nowhere location in South Carolina)that is slowly making a rise in the US News rankings thanks to its presidents campaign to get the school in the top 20 public schools in the country. Very strong engineering, science, education and nursing programs. Beautiful campus, amazing school spirit surrounding its athletic teams, friendly student body.
