Don’t bet on it. I’m sure vultures with cash (Russian, Chinese) are already waiting to pounce.
The speculation over which country is next has spawned the predictable portmanteau:
Frexit
Nexit
Swexit
But the best one yet is:
Italeave
Central London property values have been heading downwards for a few years already.
Brexit was a vote for national identity. And that is NOT a hateful, racist, xenophobic attitude. Over the course of it’s existence the EU has attempted to homogenize countries that remain culturally different. Remember Benelux? The first attempt to bring about an economic union. It involved movement between borders and trade agreements. The EU on the other hand has handed down laws which systematically eroded cultural ways of life. My first hand experience is that it’s wiped out smaller family farms in Germany. Closed small butcher shops and bakeries and other traditional family run businesses.
And…the elite just can’t understand this vote…And the term ‘elite’ has changed it’s meaning…it no longer conjures a flattering image. It conjures up an image of a snotty, “I know what’s best you redneck bubba plebes” ruling class.

This attitude will certainly determine our own November results.
I think Departugal is the best portmanteau I’ve seen.
Also Czechout, Oustria, and Finish.
“Well it looks like banks are wasting no time. There will be Brexit remorse, no doubt.”
Well…duh.
Of course this was going to happen. Brits were told it was going to happen. But a majority chose not to believe it and were told by leave leaders they were lies and scaremongering.
Who can be so stupid to think there would be no financial and economic fallouts in Britian from Brexit?
The British economy is going to suffer terribly because of this decision.
Also, in an article in the NYT this morning about the meeting of EU leaders they do not want to give Britian any time to dither. They want the process started immediately as non action by Britian is going to further damage their economies.
The article I read, said:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggested there’s no hurry.
“What’s important is that Great Britain has not put into motion this proposal, and also the agreement isn’t finished,” she said Saturday. Great Britain continues to be a full member of the EU with all rights and responsibilities. I also spoke to the British Prime Minister about that and he confirms the same.We were sad yesterday that the vote went that way. And that is no reason to be in a way especially nasty during the negotiations, but that must be properly dealt with".
It sounds like some are trying to be as vindictive as possible, which makes the headlines. So we’ll see.
"Brexit was a vote for national identity. And that is NOT a hateful, racist, xenophobic attitude. Over the course of it’s existence the EU has attempted to homogenize countries that remain culturally different. "
One of the things that fascinated me when I got into genealogy was how arbitrary boundaries were. Am I really Polish or Russian, is my husband really Austrian or Hungarian – depends when you take the snapshot.
I would be careful of “freeze framing” the borders of European countries right now and suggesting that they are immutable, clearly distinct, these-people-are-different-from-those-folks. That’s true in the short term, but not in the long term. After all, how different was the map of Europe just 100 years ago?
EU leaders should be careful not to overplay their hand. As I stated before, the UK is a net importer from the rest of Europe. It is in the rest of Europe’s interest to treat Britain well.
Interesting that some of the most disappointed parties are large corporations and the investment banks. What’s good for the 1% in the UK is good for the masses. Some Americans should take note.
Any loss in London’s predominance as a financial / banking center isn’t good for the US.
You mean that the big banks are a good thing for the economy? Wow!
“Any loss in London’s predominance as a financial / banking center isn’t good for the US.”
Any loss in London’s predominance as a financial/banking center is even worse for the UK.
Merkle just said it more nicely then the other EU leaders. She basically said they don’t need to be mean but it must be “properly” dealt with. IOW we have to get on with it.
OK… it now has an official name(s): Bretgret and Regrexit
Also; this is a fascinating, nuanced article on why 'Leave" won:

Has anyone mentioned yet that the petition for a revote has well over a million signatures?
ETA: 1.9 million now
^Great: “Brexit, Are You Sure?”
I think dstark said it best - people are stupid.
My own prediction: the chaos caused by Brexit will nix the Nexits, Swexits, and Luxembrexits, etc. The benefits of EU membership will become more apparent to all, and it will be a wake up call to Brussels to take more seriously the desire of member countries to control their borders.
Prediction number 2: that Brexit will cause many US voters to consider whether they really desire a significant departure from the status quo. Quarterly 401k statements are mailed out after June 30th, and what seems abstract to many people suddenly becomes very concrete.
One can hope, @MidwestDad3!
Even if the UK has a do-over and Brexit loses, which I think it would this time, the toothpaste is out of the tube. There’s a populist/nativist tide washing over the entire western world. I don’t know how we turn it back.
