Brilliant Student Picks Florida A&M Over Harvard

29happymom, evidently you’ve never visited the Morehouse College campus. I’ve never heard it described as ‘fun.’ And there are more than a few very serious and very stuffy administrators and educators at Morehouse. Same goes for a large part of the student body as well.

M His mom is an elementary school teacher and dad was a college professor (not sure what dad does now). Doesnt sound like they would have qualified for fee waivers based on need.

lol momofwildchild. lmkh “one” ur “stupidest post on CC” contest? ironic. i think his tough competition was you. lol

"Can’t he get fee waivers because he is an URM? "

Oy!

“Speaking of fun, have you ever seen FAMU’s band?”

Exactly! I visited my sister at a Howad homecoming, and it was the only school I applied to! And I was an elderly 17 years old when I went.

“But what really sealed the deal for FAMU, which Jones said was his fourth-choice school, was a pep rally and recruitment fair he attended. To Jones, the atmosphere was “exhilarating.” He said he comes from a long line of HBCU grads, and after that moment, his decision was made.”

“I believe Florida A&M is unlike any other college in the world just because of the HBCU experience here: the step shows, the band, the night life. It’s all unique,” Jones continued. “When it comes down to it, the family feeling – I didn’t feel that at other institutions, because I visited a lot of schools. And this is the only one [where] I felt like I was part of something larger.”

Guess you had to be there…

Sounds reasonable to go to a school costing less, closer to home. No big deal to be a college freshman at 16- my son did it (he also told his aunt he preferred UW-Madison to Stanford, money was not an issue for us). It would be more noteworthy if he were graduating from college at 16.

call me cynical, but i feel like it’s a publicity stunt. how does this get in the news without his help?

and i feel like it was pretty obvious he could get into FMCU, and thus there was no point in applying to harvard, stanford, or the other 43 schools (o.o) except just to prove to himself that he can get in…or as i said, to reject them and gain publicity

“The Root is a daily online magazine that provides thought-provoking commentary on today’s news from a variety of black perspectives.”

I don’t know how common it is to apply to college at age 16, but perhaps they thought he might get rejected solely because of his age and that’s why he applied to so many schools?

I would also suspect the point of the article is to say “Who needs your white schools? I could have gone to your precious Harvard or anywhere else, but I chose an HBC because being with my own people is way better than being at Harvard.”

Not “better”, but unique, and one that he will probably never have again.

Deleted …

LMK, I found your post so outlandish that I was prompted to read your other posts. I was figuring you were a teenager.

I still can’t quite figure you out- maybe you are a kid posing as a parent- but your various posts just don’t add up on many dimensions and just sound ‘off’ for an adult.
