Why are new freshmen put into Broadview? Can someone tell me why I should be happy about paying nearly $50k a year to have my d isolated 20 minutes walking distance (in Chicago winters) from campus? Fill me in, I think I am missing something here.

20 minutes walking distance?! The horror! Surely the polar bears will eat her.

Of course, she could also take the 171.

fyi, walking from Burton Judson to the reg takes about 15 minutes.

Technically, Broadview is on campus, so it’s not a 20 minute walk to campus. And if I remember my visit correctly, Braodview to the main quad is not a bad walk at all. If you think there are any similar schools with shorter walks, I’d like to know, because I don’t think they exist. And everyone needs to quite whining about winter, I mean you just wear some more clothes, for crying out loud we only get a good snow like twice a year.

And um, not all freshman are put into Broadview. I chose to be put into Broadview and got it. There’s only about 70 or so anyway. Everyone else is in BJ and Max Palevsky. And I spent every day of middle and high school with a 15-minute walk from home - it’s not bad unless you’ve spent your whole life with a parent to cart you everywhere. And if you’re not prepared to walk 15 minutes in a city, then are you sure you belong in a city?

My S was at one of the “far away” dorms and I had similar concerns, but he loved it and chose to remain this year. Here is some info that makes it easier for a parent to take:

“A campus bus system provides transportation to classes, dining halls, and the center of campus from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m. during the academic year. Residents of the Shoreland and Broadview are served by additional shuttle buses during peak class and dining hours.”

The buses run frequently, see:

A couple of important paragraphs:

Late-night van service
From midnight to 4:00 A.M. Monday through Thursday and from midnight to 6:00 A.M. Friday through Sunday, this on-call van service is available to students, faculty, and staff located in the University Police area of coverage (39th Street to 64th Street, Lake Shore Drive to Cottage Grove Avenue). Delays in pickups may occur, since the vans operate on a “first call, first come” basis. Call 2-2022 and give your precise address. Expect to display your Chicago Card when boarding the van.

Umbrella coverage
Anyone within the University Police coverage area can request a police escort at any time if they feel uncomfortable with their surroundings. Call 2-8181 and give your location; the first available patrol car will be dispatched to accompany you as you walk to your destination.

haha, polar bears

They ARE adorable.

fyi, no student refers to the van as “the late-night van service”. no, we affectionately like to call it the “drunk van”.

Similarly, “student break day” in the middle of winter is called “suicide prevention day.” How many suicides will you prevent?

elgordo -
while no one is happy about paying college tuition these days, please don’t worry about her being isolated in Broadview - she will be there with her housemates!

A twenty minute walk is not so dreadful - and may help to combat the ‘freshman fifteen’ I have heard tell of.

oh it’s not that bad…

large single room, private bath, bus direct to down town…what’s not to like?

And close proximity to the lake for sudden bursts of need to fling yourself in during late summer and late spring nervous breakdowns.
