  • Common app (10/10) Wrote about being a male cheerleader and the stereotypes and struggles that I faced right after my brother committed suicide. Very personal.
  • Area of Study Supplement: 9/10, I wrote about watching Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” in seventh grade and connected it to public health and my goal to help the environment and the people in it.
  • Open Curriculum Supplement: 10/10 Wrote about an economics topic called Gross National Happiness and how it could be a better measurement of the well-being of society than GDP. Connected it to Brown saying that I would love to study it at a school that values happiness so much.
  • Where Is Home Supplement: 9/10 Wrote about a reservoir near my house that I used to fish with my brother at, and where a shrine for him was built after he died.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 7/10?? AP Bio teacher wrote it but honestly, I felt like I was gonna get screwed over by my recs because they all seemed so general.
Teacher Rec #2: 7/10?? English III teacher
Counselor Rec: NO IDEA how good this was bc my school got a new guidance counselor in the fall of my senior year but I guess it must’ve been good.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: 11/10 VERY GOOD. I was lucky enough to have it with an alum from my high school. Said she’d love to see another student from there go to Brown and she was so easy to talk to. I think she really liked me and after I told her I got in she said to keep in contact!

Reflection

Strengths: I think that my writing really showed how authentic I was. I didn’t try to hide the fact I had bad test scores or anything. I also think that Brown really saw my story and understood that the stuff I went through shaped me to be an impressive student. Also, there weren’t that many opportunities available to me and I think they realized that.
Weaknesses: TEST SCORES!!! Literally, have ZERO clue how I got in without taking a single SAT subject test and having such a low SAT. Also, I accidentally sent all my sat scores to them, not just my highest so I was scared haha. I also have no real specific and unique extracurriculars.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I just crafted my application very well. Also, I think my writing got me in. I spent so long on my essay/supplements, and I think it paid off.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted: Fordham University

General Comments: I truly thought I had NO SHOT at getting in. I was expecting a deferral at best. Looking back, I really think that the officers at Brown took a chance on me and felt something when reading my app.
