Brown Transfer Fall 2020

Do you guys know how many transfers they’ll accept? I’m also applying for STEM…
I’m a sophomore transfer btw

Anywhere in the last 3 years it seems that nearly 150-200 people were admitted as transfer applicants combined for both the Spring and Fall. Judging by that I’d say we’ll see similar numbers this year. But because of what’s going on right now maybe more students could potentially be accepted or placed on waitlists to anticipate more people deferring acceptance. I’m curious if current events will see universities accepting less international applicants. We just don’t know. But in about a month that will change.

@QuitsAverage Yeah, I saw the article but Brown actually was one of the two ivies that accepted a lower percentage in RD than last year. Hopefully, that means they take more transfer applicants but at this point its just a waiting game.

Sophomore applicant here! Can’t wait for the decision to come out, especially in this confusing time

HI!!! finally found the right forum!

hello everyone!

Is 3.76 a low gpa for brown transfer?

I reallyyyy want to get into brown but im scared since i have a low gpa

@businesslove - HEY NEW PERSON! i see you on two different forums already

and im in the same boat. relax. there is literally no telling. given this year’s unorthodox situation, no one knows what will happen but remain positive. im sure one of ur schools will be lucky to have u!

I think it depends on where you’re currently at. also, GPA isn’t everything, so I wouldn’t stress.

Well good luck everyone!

did you guys do the video profile?

from last year’s forum and the year before that, it doesn’t seem like the video portfolio did any good, especially if you arent great at speaking in front of a camera.

I made one in the end. But I’ve also heard from plenty of people who were accepted as a transfer and never handed one in. My thoughts were it can only help you in the process.

I’m curious, does legacy play any role in the decision process for transfers?

I want to transfer in 2022, my hs gpa is 2.something, i show an upward trend though. My college gpa, as of now is a 3.5, this is still my first semester and i plan on joining honors program, and my schools national honors society, I’m in pre-law club, running to be president, and am going to start my own club in the fall, i volunteer at the animal shelter, volunteer with a legal services place in my city and i work. Even with all that and if i get a 4.0 gpa, will my low hs gpa cancel it all out?

@meisjuliet I’m in the same boat! Best of luck!

Waiting anxiously alongside all of you! Wanted to share my stats just in case. I’ll also be posting results once we get them. Best of luck to all of you!

I also didn’t do the video portfolio, and so far I’ve been admitted to NYU. Do y’all know whenabouts Brown will announce decisions? Ie, what does “early May” mean?

Large State University, slightly under top 100
Current Majors: BM Cello Performance, BA Liberal Arts
Current Minor: English
College GPA: 3.91
HS GPA: 4.02 W, 3.97 UW
HS Test scores: 1450 SAT, 32 ACT
College ECs: Honors student, started Musicology Club, treasurer of American String Teachers Association for two years, managing editor of Honors lit mag, founding editor of an interdisciplinary lit mag, teacher and volunteer for immigration service-learning program, teacher for middle school music program
College employment: worked in higher-education leadership office for two years as a receptionist and student advisor, internship in local library, and internship in local literary arts nonprofit
College Awards: Second Prize in Poetry in creative writing contest, given paper presentations at several state, regional, and national conferences
Rec Letters: I think I’d say 8/10. one from English prof where I was the only student who got an A+ in his class, one from a Music Theory prof who I did an independent project with, and one from my supervisor at my nonprofit internship
Essays: also 8/10, I had a strong transfer essay but a slightly weaker Why Brown one. I thought I was maybe a little too specific, basically listing all of the things at Brown I want to do.
Applied to: BA Music as primary, BA Literary Arts as secondary

Thanks!

I think last year was May 6th

I think Wednesdays and Fridays, at least in the past, seem to be the days in which they release. So maybe the 6th or the 8th will be when we hear back.

Wow this thread is a lot shorter than last years’!

I just wanted to post my info as well as I’m anxiously awaiting brown, and CC helped me in the past. I applied to Northeastern and Carnegie Mellon too, for CS+Journalism & Statistics respectively (Computer Science for Brown), but it was just to appease my mom, I really would only accept an offer from Brown.

Stats:
High School EC: captain of the crew team, president of LIFT mentorship program (test prep help for students from underprivileged backgrounds), editor-in-chief of newspaper (won National Journalist of the Year award)
HS AP’s: 5’s on all five of them - AP BC Calculus, AP History, AP Computer Science etc
SAT/ACT: 1560, 35
College EC: STEM Crew Leader (after school programs for girls), Web Developer for Rice Bikes, GIS/Data Center assistant, Social Chair of Women in CS club, eco-rep for residential college, News Writer for Rice Thresher
Internships: 1 internship in HS @ civil engineering app, got Siemens Semifinalist award. 2 summer internships at CapitalOne doing software engineering & data science in college
Awards: multiple hackathon awards (~10), Honor Roll x2, numerous National Journalism prizes in HS
GPA: 3.78. Rough 1st semester but nothing lower than B+. Our school is not easy

Reference Letters: I got 1 from a first-year architecture writing professor who I love very much & would make me his 1 TA if he could. He can only get graduate students atm. I would rate this 9.5/10, we respect each other very much. Second letter is from my math teacher, linear algebra. I went a lot to her office hours, spoke up in class, and got along very well. Probably 8/10?
Video Portfolio: I submitted one because I cannot talk enough about Brown it’s my dream school & perfect fit in every way. Talked a little bit about my interests, what I loved about Brown on my visit, how I’m taking a semester off, what I’m doing in quarantine, talked about my favorite recent book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”

I applied to Brown ED in 2017 but then was deferred and rejected. My dad had just been diagnosed with cancer which I explained in my application supplemental for transfer, and desperately want to transfer to Brown my dream school to be closer to my mom, my last remaining family member, and home. I am currently at Rice in Houston & I hate everything about the South. The CS program there is pretty outdated & I miss the atmosphere of passion & vision on the East Coast. going to providence was like a fairytale come true.

Don’t know how likely it is for me to get in, attending a public university flagship and had sub-par high school grades/test scores (relative to Brown’s admitted students). My app is pretty much solely reliant on my LORs, Essays, and ECs. For LOR, my HS English Teacher compared me to George Orwell, my English Prof said I was the best student they had in 10+ years, and with my other two academic recs (Debate, Philosophy) I’m not sure how positive they are. My main transfer essay was read over by my English professor, and seemed to like it quite a lot. I’d like to think my extracurriculars are at the very least notably eclectic, while my descriptions for the ECs create a more holistic picture of myself.
