BU premed student charged with death of woman who advertised in Craigslist

Megan McAllister has apparently visted Philip Markoff in jail and has since called off the wedding [Philip Markoff’s fiancee calls off wedding - BostonHerald.com](http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1169128)
It seems to me that she handled this in a fairly reasonable way - showing loyalty initially, and then, when the evidence convinced her, being realistic. Her family seems quite supportive. Her dad was gracious in speaking with the press, and her mom accompanied her to the jail visit.

That god this happened NOW and not after they got married and had a kid.

I don’t think people like this stop until they get caught.

I wish her all the best.

According to McCloone’s in Long Branch, NJ, the wedding was called off last week…don’t want to go into why I know this; but the fact that she “announced” this today strikes me as odd…I feel sooo bad for her, but it looks like she is going through the stages of “grief” (denial, anger, etc) in the public eye…the way the lawyer explained it this morning made it appear like reality is finally sinking in…

^

Perhaps she did not want to announce the cancellation publicly until she had met face to face with Philip and communicated her position to him first. But she did owe it to the service providers to let them know of the cancellation as early as possible so that they could accept a rebooking.

The wedding was off the minute bail was denied. There is no way on earth that a murder trial will take place before August. So, as soon as bail was denied, everyone with half a brain knew the wedding would not take place as planned. It can’t.

I assume that the family realized this even if Megan didn’t immediately. They probably just refrained from pointing this out to her immediately. When it came time to pay the balance of the deposits, they didn’t since they knew it would be lost money.

The band has already announced that they had been told the wedding was off. They had announced that they are now available on that weekend on their website. Unfortunately, there are a few reporters who have less than half a brain who tried to turn the band’s statement that a relative of McAllister’s had told them the wedding was off into a story that McAllister had “broken” her engagement. I think the statement was made to stop those sorts of silly stories. The attorney EXPLAINED that it was off because he will remain incarcerated until trial–but somehow most of the press are just leaving that out.

She stopped by the apartment to pick up some things. (I wonder if she signed the lease too or it’s only in Markoff’s name.) The lawyer said that she doesn’t expect to return to Massachusetts. That’s an implied statement that the DA has not told her that she’s going to have to testify before the grand jury and/or trial.

My heart goes out to her. It also goes out to Ms. Brisman’s family and to the McAllister/Markoff families.

I hope some good will come up this. Perhaps the age to gamble legally will be raised from 18 to 21. Perhaps Craig’s list will be cleaned up. Perhaps the “non-professionals” seeking a few quick bucks will realize the risk they are running by letting men they don’t know meet them for “hand stress relief” alone in a motel room. (The Rhode Island victim, whose husband was with her and interrupted the attempted robbery, doesn’t want to press charges. Wonder why? How much you want to bet that her neighbors would be stunned at what that “nice young couple” was doing?)

This is just a sad, sad story.
